FRESH NEWS ISSUE 13
APRIL 2018
Congratulations!
Well, you did it. When you arrived in August, you may not have been sure how this year would turn out. Nevertheless, little by little, things fell into place and you managed to survive two semesters of stress, Commons food, papers, presentations and finals. We hope that your first year at UP was memorable in many ways. Congratulations!
It was a great pleasure to serve you this year and we thank you for helping the Shepard Academic Resource Center successfully complete another year. While we met with over 600 students this year, we are sorry to say that we have not been able to speak to all of you, but many of you have given us great ideas for next year. We hope to pass on to the next class all that great advice you’ve offered. For those of you we didn’t get to know, you still have your chance. This will be your last Fresh News, and we would love some feedback from you about  what you think first year students need to know as they begin their time at UP. Please click on the link below to take our short survey. responses recieved by 4/25 will be entered into a drawing for a Barnes & Noble gift card!
Based on your responses, the Shepard Resource Center will be able to help next year’s new students in their first year. The Shepard Academic Resource Center is here for all students. Since you have completed this first year, you’re the expert. Next year, if you see “fresh-people” who need answers to questions, please send them to our Resource Center & help mentor them. Of course, you are always welcome back for the resources available here (candy, hot chocolate, time budget sheets and semester planners). Thanks for your help and have a great summer!

Clark Library Tidbits
As you go through the last few weeks of Spring semesterremember that the Clark Library is here for you!
  • Need quiet space to study? In addition to the Quiet Floor, the upper floor classroom is open daily as the Quiet Study Annex through the end of the semester.
  • Need help with finding and citing sources, or wondering if the sources you found are reliable? Ask us! The Research Desk is a good place to get help from librarians and assistants, or ask any time day or night using the 24/7 chat. You can also make an appointment with a librarian for more in-depth assistance.
  • Need a study break? Keep an eye out for our dog visitors during Dead Week and take a moment to paws and relax!
  • Need more time to study for exams? Library hours extend until midnight on Friday, April 27th and Saturday, April 28th. And we are open until 2:00am from April 29th - May 2nd.
  • Once you finish the semester, remember to return any library materials before you leave for the summer. If you are staying in Portland, come see us! The library is open all summer, plus our online resources are available to you wherever you might be. Good luck wrapping up your first year, and have a wonderful summer!
Hard Decision: Not Returning
If you decide that you will not be returning to UP in the fall, please contact the Shepard Center to complete an Exit Interview. The Shepard Resource Center is designed to help new students through their first year, but to do that we need to understand what we can do better. By contacting us at (503) 943-7895 or emailing sarc@up.edu, you will be helping future classes by sharing your experiences as a freshman and what you did and did not like about UP.  Also, this opportunity lets the administration hear your voice. All answers to questions are confidential and are designed to improve life at UP for future first-year students.

Leadership Courses for Fall 2018
Did you know that some of the top things employers are looking in their candidates are leadership skills? Do you want to set yourself apart when applying for internships, jobs, and service opportunities? Would you like to possess leader habits such as being more courageous and motivational? Consider registering for a Fall Semester leadership course in the Franz Center Leader Certificate Program! Courses are 1 credit and meet once per week, and scholarships are available (see the link above). All students are able to register for the first course in the program (LDR 225: Foundations of Leadership). All majors are welcome!
The Leader Certificate Program is designed to provide leaders with the tools, knowledge, and ability to impact and inspire their followers using the key leader habits. There is also a new leadership course being offered next fall titled LDR 392: Leadership and Morality. This exciting new one-credit leadership course will be taught by Dan McGinty and Dr. Dave Houglum and meets on Tuesdays from 4:10pm-5:05pm during Fall Semester 2018. This course gives students the opportunity to explore the moral imperative of leadership. If you have any questions, please contact Dan McGinty or Dr. Dave Houglum .
Summer Classes
As the semester nears its end, it’s time to start thinking about summer plans. Summer classes are one option to consider. Whether taken here at UP or at your local community college, summer classes are a great way to catch up in credits, to get ahead, or retake a class in which you may not have done so well. One problem that some students face is lacking the credits to attain sophomore status for their second year. If you will not have 30 credits by the end of this term, summer classes may allow you to reach sophomore status for the new academic year.
If not taken at UP, all summer classes must be pre-approved by the college you belong to (BUS, ED, CAS, NRS, or EGR) at least one week before the first day of the class and before you register for the class.

Many classes are offered at UP over the summer. To browse through the selection, feel free to look through summer classes on Self-Serve, by selecting "Summer 2018" for the term under "Registration - Look Up Classes". Here at UP, summer sessions feature scheduling options of varying length. You can select to attend classes during a six-week or eight-week session, or a several-day seminar.
First 6-week term is May 14th-June 21st; second 6-week term is June 25th-August 2nd. First 8-week term is May 14th-July 5th, second 8-week term is June 11th-August 2nd. You can take up to six credits per session over the summer.  If staying local for UP summer classes, you are eligible for on-campus summer housing. You must apply for summer housing through Residence Life at least two weeks before the start of the term for which you are requesting housing.

One thing to keep in mind is that financial aid may not transfer to summer classes. If you take at least six credits per semester, your financial aid may be available. Contact Financial Aid if you need help financing your summer education.
We'll be here this summer if you need us!
Summer Resources at UP!
Did you know that all of the offices on campus are open during the summer? The Shepard Center, Career Center, Health & Counselling Center are all open during the summer months.
  • The Shepard Center will be open for tutoring appointments (for most subjects), academic counseling, earning assitance counseling, and Accessible Education Services.
  • The Career Center is open year-round! Appointments are available throughout the summer to discuss majors, career, internship, and more!
Who Impacted Your Freshman Year? Let us know!
If you have visited us here in the Shepard Center, you know that we’re interested in doing what we can to understand and help with the freshmen experience. One of the ways we’d like to continue to do that as you wind down the final few weeks of your first year is to understand who has had the biggest positive impact on your freshman year experience. Below please find a link to the SARC “Shepard’s Shepherds” Survey – named as it is because we want to know who best “guided” our freshmen class this year. The survey asks just 3 questions and is guaranteed to take no longer than two minutes of your time!
The information you provide will be used to identify groups and individuals, both on campus and off, who have had the biggest impact on the University of Portland class of 2020 during this first year. We will also do our best to contact the individuals named in this survey to let them know of their influence.
  • If you include your name on the survey, we will name you in the letter sent to your nominee as the first-year student who selected this “shepherd.”
  • If you do not include your name on the survey, we will still send a letter to your nominee, and let this person know he or she was nominated by “a first-year student.”
New Hybrid CHM/CST Course!
If you need to fulfill a UP Core science and/or upper-division CAS Core and/or CHM or CST major elective, the team-taught CST/CHM 391: Communicating Science in Public course can fulfill two of those requirements this summer session!
Jeff Kerssen-Griep (CST) and Steve Mayer (CHM) will team-teach the course, developed from an earlier UP Honors seminar. It’s designed to help students examine how science and communication intertwine in the practice, dissemination, and reception of empirical discoveries, especially in this Internet era. Via hands-on experiments using equipment in the chemistry and physics laboratories, and investigating scholarship and popular discourse, students will learn means to understand, accomplish, and more effectively communicate about modern science in light of this knowledge.
Feel free to contact either Steve Mayer & Jeff Kerssen-Griep with questions or to request the syllabus.
