Dr. Mark A. Smith '91

2019 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient
The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to an alumnus or alumna who excels in their chosen profession and reflects favorably upon themselves, their community, and Grand Valley. Mark Smith, MD, ’91, is the Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs/Chief Medical Officer of Henry Ford Allegiance Health, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Henry Ford Allegiance Medical Group based in Jackson, Michigan.

Dr. Shinan Wu
2019 Outstanding Eduacator Award Recipient
The Outstanding Educator Award is given to a faculty member who has had a significant impact on the careers of alumni. Shinian Wu, Ph.D., joined Grand Valley's faculty in 1998. He teaches both undergraduate and graduate linguistic courses, as well as training in the College of Education’s Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program. Dr. Wu has maintained supportive relationships with alumni in a variety of fields and years after graduation.

Fishladder: A Student Journal of Art and Writing
Fishladder: A Student Journal of Art and Writing is a student-run publication at Grand Valley. Fishladder publishes fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, drama, photography, and art created by GVSU students. The editors aim to select the best, most artistic work for publication in the yearly print edition, which is unveiled every April.

Noah Barton

Senior Becomes First GVSU Student to Earn Boiler License
As a first-year student, Noah Barton decided to apply for employment in Facilities Services because his sister, who attended Grand Valley, worked there. The Grand Rapids native, now a senior majoring in mechanical engineering, has spent four years working side-by-side with engineers to make sure Grand Valley's boilers are running efficiently. Barton's training led him to earn a boiler operators and boiler engineers license, making him the first student to achieve this certification.

GVSU Women's Basketball Fall in Midwest Region Championship
The Grand Valley women's basketball season came to an end on March 18 in the NCAA DII Midwest Region Championship game where they fell to No. 1 nationally and regionally ranked Drury, 51-44. The Lakers 29 wins this season is the second most in program history and is the fourth straight season they have tallied at least 24 marks in the W column, all of which have come under head coach Mike Williams.

GVSU Men's Basketball Season Ends in Midwest Region Quarterfinals
The Grand Valley men's basketball team made it to the NCAA Midwest Region Quarterfinals before falling to the No.15 Lewis Flyers. The Lakers, who at one point were 12-11 on the year and on the verge of missing the post-season entirely, had an incredible run to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010. While the narrow loss stings now, this team has plenty to be proud of as they build towards next season.

Club Sport Highlight: 2019 AHCA National Runner-Up
The ACHA held the 2019 national tournament for men's DIII hockey in Frisco, Texas from March 26-30. For the first time since the 2008-09 season, our DIII Lakers qualified for nationals and ended up making a big run. Several of the GVSU players enjoyed one of the best experiences in their life.
