The JMC School Career Fair is tomorrow! All students are welcome to attend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 in Stauffer-Flint Hall to learn more about internships, part-time positions and full-time positions. Students, faculty and staff can get free portraits for their LinkedIn profiles taken by professional photographer Nick Krug from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third floor. The resume review breakout room will be in the Austin Seminar Room from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Steve Rottinghaus at steve@rottinghaus@ku.edu.

Two sections of JMC 104 visited two different campus locations to give students the chance to practice working on their “describing things and places” assignment. One session visited the First Nations Student Association tipi in front of Strong Hall last Wednesday, and another visited Watson Library.
Meet the UDK Advisory Board: The purpose of the UDK Advisory Board is to provide guidance and support for student media. The board meets quarterly to study issues presented by student leaders, the UDK Director of Strategy, Dean Ann Brill, and the University, and provide recommendations as requested.

Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting’s PBS short film “Seed Warriors” is featured in the Nebraska Public Media book club kits.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman and Knight Chair Steve Wolgast, with co-author Meg Heckman (Northeastern) recently had their paper, "Examining Gaps in Journalism Curriculum to Solve the News Desert Crisis," accepted by Journalism and Mass Communication Educator.
A study by JMC Assistant Professor Judy Watts shows that testimonials about a person's lived experience can open people to acceptance of attitudes different than their own. Read more about the study, "How can you change people's minds on controversial topics?"
Professor Emeritus Chuck Marsh’s book chapter “Peter Kropotkin’s ‘Double Tendency’ and the Paradigm Debate in Modern Public Relations” has been published in Kropotkin Now: Life, Freedom and Ethics (Black Rose Books).
Margaret Hair, lecturer for JMC 304, spoke at the HighEdWeb 2023 Annual Conference in Buffalo, New York on Oct. 10. Her presentation, “Market Like a Journalist: How to Use Reporting Skills to Improve your Content,” was part of a conference track focusing on social media strategy, content and accessibility.

KU Study Abroad is hosting two info sessions so students can learn more about studying for a semester or academic year at the University of Costa Rica. Students must have completed SPAN 216 or tested out of that course in order to participate.
Drop-in advising available: If you have any questions or need to meet with someone to discuss your classes or goals, an advisor is available from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 117.

Apply now for JMC School Scholarships: Undergraduate students - it's time to apply for School of Journalism and Mass Communications scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year! Last spring, the school offered over $860,000 in scholarships and awards to current and incoming students, and 93% of students who applied received at least one scholarship. All students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications are encouraged to apply.
Apply here (Click the red Sign In button at the top, then log in with your KU online ID and password). You may be asked to complete a general questionnaire before moving to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications Undergraduate Scholarship Application.
The applications deadline is December 15, 2023. Recipients will be notified in March 2024.
The KU Ad Club is meeting on Oct. 18 on the third floor in Stauffer Flint. Kim Wallace Carlson is a Strategic Communications and Content Marketing Executive for Kauffman Foundations. She is currently located in Kansas City, Missouri. Her responsibilities include developing the organization's content strategy and leading a team of nine professionals executing communication, content and creative work for the foundation.
Kim graduated from the University of Kansas with a BS in Journalism and a minor in Sociology. She also has a certificate of completion in Design Thinking and Art of Innovation. On her LinkedIn profile, she has an article that is highlighted as “Dismantling Barriers for Missouri Women to Thrive in the Workplace.”
She also has served other brands such as Ogden Publications, Gatorade, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Kansas City Zoo, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and many more.
The Burge Union is hosting a special presentation by Dr. Paul Farber, Director and Co-Founder of Monument Lab, on Friday Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Farber’s presentation is entitled, “Telling the Full Story: Power and Presence in Public. Monument lab is a nonprofit public art and history studio based in Philadelphia. The presentation will take place in the Burge Union, Forum AB on Level 1. More details about the event and the project are available online.
