Thursday, April 23 3:00 p.m. CT on Zoom Virtual Alumni College | Filming (for) SPIRITS: Tracking South African Liberation History in 19th-century Northfield
In the process of rewriting its liberation story, South Africa discovers that the small midwestern town of Northfield played a crucial role in its political awakening, i.e. the birth of its multiracial democracy. This is the surprising story told by Chérif Keïta, a Malian-born professor at Carleton and resident of Northfield, believed by many in South Africa to have uncovered this hidden historic connection through an act of ancestral possession.
Save the date for a symposium May 8 to May 10 on campus in honor of Chérif Keïta's retirement. If you cannot attend but would like to send Chérif some warm wishes, or a memory to share, we ask that you send them to mtatge@carleton.edu by April 25.
