Laura DaRos, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, SMFA at Tufts
Dear Parents and Families,
Greetings from Tufts! It’s hard to believe we are already a month into the spring semester. I’m writing to you from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts, where our walls are filled with work from students, faculty, alumni, and exhibiting artists. I joined the SMFA community in the fall of 2016 after nine years in the Office for Campus Life on the Medford campus. It has been a tremendous learning experience and a pleasure to become part of the creativity and hard work of the SMFA campus, and I’d like to share with you some of the current happenings and ongoing improvements taking place at 230 The Fenway.

What's Happening Academically?

If your student is experiencing a physical or mental illness, it can have a negative impact on their ability to focus, study, and perform well on exams. We encourage them to seek support early.

For Short-Term Illnesses:

Your student should complete the Short-Term Illness Notification form that they can find on SIS under "Student Living" if they have the flu, a migraine, GI distress, or similar type issue. This does not excuse them from class or assignments, but notifies professors. Students must follow up with their instructors about missed work.
Health Services will see all students with health concerns and will provide absence notes only for missing in-class exams just prior to the exam (not after the fact).

For Long-Term/Ongoing Illnesses:

Your student should seek support early from their Advising Dean so their dean can assist them in managing these matters. Medical documentation should not be sent to instructors. Instructors can offer more options to support your student when they are provided with proper and timely information from your student’s Advising Dean. Late in the semester there are often limited options for your student, and illness may never be used for retroactive academic action.

Your student should:

  • Give their Tufts healthcare provider permission to speak with their Advising Dean about the fact that they have an ongoing or long-term illness.
  • Schedule an appointment with their dean.
  • Consider using services in the Academic Resource Center such as Time Management & Study Skills consulting.
  • Consider whether their illness may qualify them for official accommodations, managed by Student Accessibility Services.
  • Consider scheduling an appointment with Counseling and Mental Health Service.
We want to support your student academically in good health and plan well when health matters intervene.

Career Corner: Conversations with the Tufts Career Center

Focus on Internships

Did you know? 90% of the Class of 2017 completed at least one internship while at Tufts. Internships are a wonderful way to develop career competencies, make connections with employers, and gain a sense of confidence in one’s work and career direction. Keep in mind:
  • “Internship” can mean many things. Short-term work experiences can be full time, part time, paid or unpaid. There is no expectation that first-year students secure an internship; many younger students gain exposure to career fields through volunteering and shadowing. Students can chat with a Career Advisor about finding opportunities.
  • Internship funding resources are available. We encourage your student to learn about funding for full-time unpaid internships through the Career Center Summer Internship Grants and other programs.
  • Your student has access to amazing internship advice from fellow Jumbos. The TIP (Tufts Internship Profiles) Book features hundreds of internship profiles across all industries, searchable by type of internship, major, and paid/unpaid positions.
