Howdy-Back from Tubac!
The Senior Golfers made their first trip to the artist/golf colony of Tubac, Arizona, and found a beautiful and interesting destination to enjoy during the late winter season. This is high season in the area, and SGA shared the small town and resort with tourists from the northwest, Canada, and beyond.
The SGA event began with welcoming drinks on the outdoor terrace at the resort's Stables Restaurant. Valued newcomers Maki Boudra and Ellen Polokoff, who traveled to Tubac all the way from the great state of Hawaii, were welcomed. SGA Hall of Fame members Janie Risley and Bill Suehs were recognized and details were given for the week's events. A lively dinner followed, with much conversation and excitement about the week ahead.
After the three beautiful days of golf, newcomer Ellen Polokoff was winner for the ladies. "I wanted to see what Senior Golfers of America was all about," said Ellen. "The Out West has been outstanding and as a first timer I was extremely impressed. This a great group of people and Catherine and Cynthia put their heart and soul into what is their history. Tubac was an interesting place! I found the shops and selection of merchandise unique and the people all extremely helpful and friendly. The accommodations and food provided the best of experiences. And, then the golf, which brings us all together as a common interest... The golf environment was new to me with cactus plants and different varieties of trees than in my home of Hawaii has with its palm trees and other native greenery. My only concern was searching for an errant ball that I might encounter snakes -- no snakes in Hawaii!"
Winner for the men was Louisianan Ken Rabalais. "I always enjoy the Senior Golfers trips," said Ken, "and I am delighted to be one of your winners! This was an unusual and interesting place to visit. I look forward to seeing all of you on more SGA trips this coming year. I am going to do some more recruiting at home in Lafayette so others can enjoy the group as we all do." Low Gross and Low Net winners took home gift certificates, as well as colorful prints of desert wildlife by Arizona artist Joseph Robertson, whose work can be seen online at http://www.thegalleryinwilliams.com/joe-robertson.html.
Low Net winners were Maki Boudra and Bob Fairchild. Close to pin winners were Ellen Polokoff, Ken Rabalais, Janie Risley, and Bill Suehs. Winning Best Ball team was Bob Fairchild and Frank & Lucy Hart. Second place went to Diane Bruner, Ken Rabalais, Janie Risley, and Bill Suehs. Appreciation prize went to Chris Fairchild. Congratulations to all!
