Post and Courier announces expansion in Myrtle Beach and Greenville

In a time when many newspapers nationally have shuttered their doors, or dramatically slashed resources, The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C. is growing and investing in new markets, starting with Greenville and Myrtle Beach, S.C. The newspaper will hire and station reporters and editors in both markets to cover news as it occurs - direct from the source. In Myrtle Beach, an international tourist destination, readers will have the option of print or digital news while Greenville, the state’s main manufacturing hub will publish as digital only.
“With the full support and resources of The Post and Courier, which encompasses 82 journalists and photojournalists, the largest news staff in South Carolina, these communities will now have access to the quality journalism that is our trademark, written by a team of journalists in their home towns, reporting on the issues that are of greatest concern to them.” according to Publisher PJ Browning.
Pierre Manigault Chairman of the Board of Directors for Evening Post Industries, the parent company of The Post and Courier, said, “This is not about money; this is about going out and serving the whole state with good journalism.” Read more.

Berkeley attorney sues school district after asked to pay thousands for public records

A Berkeley County attorney is suing the school district after he said he was asked to pay thousands of dollars to access documents and emails requested under South Carolina’s public records law.
Tom Fernandez, who is also running for a seat in the S.C. House this year, first submitted a public records request to the Berkeley County School District nearly a year ago. He hoped to get copies of various documents and emails exchanged on the district’s server.
The district responded to Fernandez’s initial request and agreed to provide the documents, according to a lawsuit filed last week, but at a cost of more than $47,000.

Should Google and Facebook be forced to pay for content?

In a recent column for the New York Times, media writer Ben Smith wrote about how regulators in Australia and France are moving to force digital platforms like Google and Facebook to pay media companies directly for the content they carry from publishers, in the wake of new copyright rules set by the European Union last year. A number of other countries have also tried to do this, with varying degrees of success—Germany passed a copyright law in 2013, but has had difficulty enforcing it, while Spain passed a similar law in 2014, at which point Google responded by shutting down its Google News service completely in that country. The rationale for these kinds of moves against the digital platforms, as Smith laid out in his column, is relatively simple: Google and Facebook took control of the advertising industry, thereby destroying the media’s ability to earn a living, which in turn has led to a decline in journalism.

Gannett is planning a combined ad and news-side extravaganza on ‘Rebuilding America’

Gannett has launched a combined ad sales and news initiative for the end of the month on the theme of how businesses and individuals are preparing for a broad reopening of the economy.
The “Rebuilding America” special issues, planned for May 30 and 31, will appear across Gannett’s 260 regional paper network as well as USA Today.
An internal memo from a regional editor, obtained by Poynter last week, offers this overview: It’s a joint effort between the news and the sales side. In the current uncertainty, the moving target is the ad side. A sales rally launches today and will set the tone for the effort. We’ll just have to see how big this gets.

A journalist’s guide to using Zoom for community engagement

On March 14th, 2020, the New York Public Library closed all of their neighborhood branches. NYC DOE schools closed for the remainder of the school year the following day. On March 16th, the Local Voices Network hosted our first digital community conversation in partnership with the Center for Community Media at the Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. That conversation, featuring Census 2020 outreach workers from the Yemeni American Merchants Association, is an important time capsule. A group of community members grapple with how to adapt in-person census outreach to align with best practices for physical distancing.
Over the past two months, beginning when Americans started physical distancing, the Local Voices Network has hosted dozens of small group community conversations utilizing Zoom. We’ve worked with news organizations across the country to host larger town hall meetings and more focused topical small group conversations. This digital work builds off of our pre-COVID-19 in-person collaborations with libraries, community organizations and local reporters. As critical decisions are being made about resources, health care and public safety, it’s important for community members to have space to gather and share questions and experiences that might otherwise be overlooked. We’ve found Zoom to be an effective tool for hosting these intimate digital conversations. We’ve put together this short guide to help think through your digital gatherings, from the larger philosophical questions to the nitty gritty of the tech. If you are interested in collaborating with LVN to train facilitators and host conversations for your own communities and audiences, please reach out to us at hello@lvn.org.
