Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye's publication, “War Chief, Friend of the President, Prohibitionist: Would the 'Real' Little Turtle Please Stand Up?,” published in Vol. 40-3 of American Journalism was named winner of American Journalism’s 2024 Best Article Award. This annual award honors research published in the journal during the last year that is original, rigorous and makes an outstanding contribution to scholarship in journalism and mass communication history. Members of the AJ editorial board judged the top article from the best manuscripts published in each of the four issues of the journal that year.
Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon won the Linda Shockley Award for Excellence in Teaching from AEJMC's Champions of Editing. Her entry, “Ask AI — and check the answer,” was part of JMC 553, where students asked questions of generative AI and then fact-checked the answers. A video description of the exercise will be posted on the Champions of Editing site after the AEJMC conference.
Doctoral student Rim Chaif and Associate Professor Teri Finneman had their article, "#My place isn’t in the kitchen: Examining Feminist Facebook Framing of an Algerian Social Movement," accepted into Social Media and Society.
Knight Chair of Audience & Community Engagement in News Professor of the Practice Stephen Wolgast was an invited speaker at the Mensa National Convention in Kansas City on July 6. His presentation, “Free Speech Opportunist: Elon Musk’s Degradation of the Town Square,” showed how X’s new owner, despite his claim to be a free speech opportunist, actually limits free speech in ways that harm public discussion on his social media platform.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman has received a contract offer from Lexington Books for her upcoming book, "News Desert U," with Pamela Walck of Duquesne University.
Lecturer Gerri Berendzen and Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon reprised their presentations from the April ACES conference for members of the KU Marketing staff on July 8. Berendzen discussed fact-checking tools and practices, and McLendon talked about clichés in writing.
