Nate Bukaty, a KU JMC School alum, spoke to JMC 430 (Communicating Sports Information) students about the steps he’s taken to achieve his “dream job” of broadcasting soccer worldwide and of bringing the World Cup to Kansas City in 2026. Bukaty is currently a play-by-play announcer for MLS Season Pass on Apple TV and a host on Sports Radio 810 WHB.

John Hanna spoke to JMC 551, Advanced Multimedia Reporting, on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Hanna, who has been the Topeka correspondent for the Associated Press since 1999, shared what it’s like to be on the legislative beat and discussed the Kansan’s potential coverage of the Kansas Legislature in the spring.
The Eudora Times has launched a $25,000 pledge drive to support its continued operations. Since 2019, the start-up online newspaper has provided our students with real world experience in community journalism. All funding supports these young journalists in their work.

Professor of Practice Angie Hendershot successfully defended her dissertation proposal on Friday, Nov. 22. Her dissertation explores how first-generation professionals' identities shape their selection and use of social media platforms for financial literacy content from the lens of social identity theory, critical media effects and asset-based cultural wealth framework.
Professor Mugur Geana was an invited lecturer at the Public Relations executive graduate program at Quadriga University in Berlin on Nov. 18. Geana lectured online about research methods in strategic communication and using Artificial Intelligence for qualitative and quantitative data analysis, addressing data preparation, dedicated AI tools, ethical considerations, benefits and limitations.

Ph.D. students Rim Chaif and Nazra Izhar presented at the National Communication Association 110th Annual Conference in the Health Communication Division. Their project addressed women’s concerns about contraceptive side effects, "I am too afraid of them messing me up: analysis of social support in online discussion among women on birth control effects.”

The Budig Lecture given by Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon is now available to watch on the JMC School YouTube. McLendon, the recipient of the 2024 Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing, presented “Soul of the Story: Writing in the Age of AI,” a lecture on why we write, how we write and why humans are still integral in the writing process. Assistant Professor Judy Watts recently attended the NCA conference in New Orleans to present her progress on her grant-funded research supported by the NCA Research Cultivation Grant. She also presented her research, "Is it Safe? The effect of narrative vs. non-narrative messages on story-related knowledge of medicated abortion," conducted with graduate students Jun Pei and Michaella Barros.

Dole hosts Pizza and Politics: On Friday, Dec. 6 at 12 p.m., the Dole Institute of Politics Student Advisory Board (SAB) is hosting its final Pizza and Politics of the year in Alderson Auditorium at the Kansas Union. The event, “Saving Social Security: Should Students Stress?” features KU Professor Zachry Mohr. It will involve a lively discussion about the role of social security now and in the future. As always, free pizza will be provided for all who attend.
Dole SAB hosts last meeting of semester: On Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Dole Institute of Politics Student Advisory Board (SAB) will have its final meeting of the semester. Join us at the Dole Institute (2350 Petefish Dr.) at 5:30 p.m. to discuss events, membership and opportunities for students!

Apply for the Korva Coleman Diversity in Journalism Internship: The KMUW Korva Coleman Internship is designed to train college students of color to be part of the next generation of public radio reporters and newscasters.
The Coleman intern will get an immersive, hands-on learning experience at KMUW, Wichita’s award-winning National Public Radio station, as well as mentoring from NPR newscaster Korva Coleman. The internship is for 10 weeks beginning May 27, 2025, and ending Aug. 1. The Coleman intern will work 40 hours a week. They will be paid a $5,000 stipend and receive free room and board.
