2024 Convocation
This year’s Harvard Chan School Convocation was held on Wednesday, May 22! Over 600 students graduated, including 4 PhD students, 27 SM2 students, and 49 MPH students from GHP. As graduates transition into the next phases of their lives, Dean Baccarelli quoted an old teacher to suggest asking “What are your dreams? What are your skills? Aisha Yousafzai Receives Sastry Award for Outstanding Teaching in Public Health
At Tuesday’s Harvard Chan Awards Ceremony, Professor of Child Development and Global Health Aisha Yousafzai received the Sastry Award for Outstanding Teaching in Public Health! The Sastry Teaching Award is one of the School’s highest teaching honors and recognizes faculty for their significant impact on students and the ways they have inspired students to reach their public health goals. As nominators pointed out, Aisha “has demonstrated exceptional dedication and mentorship, extending far beyond her teaching responsibilities,” and she “truly cares about students, their learning, and creates a culture” in which students feel “comfortable expressing different experiences and opinions.” Congratulations, Aisha!

Caleb Kumar joined GHP as a research assistant in the Health Systems Innovation Lab (HSIL) on April 29. As a student at Stanford University, Caleb patented a machine learning technology, founding a company that won the University World Startup Cup in 2015 and was acquired in 2021. His graduate research focused on improving opiate-related patient–provider communications, and after graduation, Caleb worked on generative AI models at Medtronic and co-founded several digital health apps. At HSIL, Caleb hopes to continue developing data-driven health care solutions. Caleb can be reached via email at ckumar@hsph.harvard.edu.

Leveraging Partnerships to Improve the Health of Young People Living with HIV in Peru

This Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) event will showcase the essential role of partnerships in designing and evaluating interventions for young people affected by HIV in Peru by spotlighting the successful partnership between Molly Franke, associate professor of global health and social medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Renato Errea, head of the HIV Program at Socios En Salud. Speakers will describe the tangible impact their work has had on improving access to HIV care for Peruvian adolescents and will offer valuable insights into how they have navigated complex challenges through a bidirectional partnership.

The HBNU Fogarty Global Health Training Program provides one-year mentored research fellowship opportunities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for PhD candidates, medical students, and postdoctoral candidates from the U.S. and LMICs. The program supports research in areas of interest including HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases, mental health, maternal and child health and nutrition, and more. HGHI Burke Climate and Health Fellowship
This two-year fellowship program offers financial support for eligible research fellows, post-doctoral scholars, and early career faculty pursuing scholarly research at the intersection of climate change and global health. During this fellowship, which runs from September to June, HGHI Burke Climate and Health Fellows will work closely with a Harvard faculty mentor on their proposed research project. Please note that all applicants are required to have a sponsoring mentor from Harvard, and applications are due by 5 pm on Friday, May 31. Global Perspectives on Decentralized Health Systems
This one-week course, which runs from August 5 to 9, 2024, explores the development and implementation of effective health care decentralization policies. Participants will learn to identify which functions benefit from decentralization and understand the necessary capacities at both subnational and national levels to ensure success. The course will be led by Thomas J. Bossert, senior lecturer on global health policy, emeritus. High Quality Health Systems: Assessing Performance and Improving at Scale
This one-week course will run from October 21 to 25, 2024 and will review the conceptual frameworks of health systems and quality of care and discuss how these can be used to organize measurement and performance assessment. This course will be led by Margaret Kruk, professor of health systems, and Diana Bowser, associate dean for research and integrated science at the Boston College Connell School of Nursing.
