In Memoriam: Joseph Albert Cussen, CFC, '57 |
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Br. Joseph Albert Cussen ’57. He spent nearly 60 years as a member of the Iona community, where he taught Spanish for decades with great joy and enthusiasm. Br. Cussen is also remembered as an avid sports enthusiast, especially following the Iona men’s basketball and soccer teams, as well as the New York Giants, New York Yankees and Notre Dame football. Br. Cussen was most recently a member of the Brothers’ community at St. Joseph’s Residence in New Rochelle.
“Br. Cussen was greatly admired and appreciated by legions of alumni,” recalled Br. J. Kevin Devlin, Ed.D., ’61. “He was a gracious and kind man with a ready smile and a true and faithful follower of Blessed Brother Edmund Rice.”
In 2017, the Br. Joseph A. Cussen ’57 Endowed Scholarship was established to support undergraduate students pursuing their education at Iona. Anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so by selecting the scholarship from the drop-down menu here.

Gael Nation Surpasses Five to Fight Goals with Over 950 Donors and $180,000 Raised |
Iona University extends its gratitude for the generous contributions and enthusiastic participation shown throughout Five to Fight. This support continues to make a lasting impact on Iona students, programs, and the entire university community.
Thanks to this collective effort, Gael Nation came together in an extraordinary way—over 950 donors contributed more than $180,000, surpassing the initial 500-donor goal, then exceeding 750 and even 850 donors. This generosity fuels every part of Iona’s mission: ensuring competitive excellence, modernizing athletic infrastructure, expanding educational access, and strengthening leadership.
