News That Rocks

Online or In Person August 2020 ROCKS!

The sweet sound of live music is floating through the halls!  We've kicked off our summer show season, we're getting back to in person groups and lessons, and we're even eeking out a camp.  Check out all our refreshing summer *coolness* as those last dog days of summer head your way!

Show Groups are Back In the House!!!!

Finally!!!  We had an awesome time here at the school  with our first week of in person rehearsals for our House Band, Synchronicity, Jimi Hendrix Experience and Bad Brains rehearsals! We're so glad to have everyone back in person to do some rockin'!  We really are pinching ourselves.  For August we will be coming in every other week to ensure that everyone understands and follows our protocols and that we can keep things super safe, but then hope to go weekly in September.

Everyone sounds great and it's apparent that they've been keeping the music alive while quarrantining.  We're working on some safe outdoor performance options so stay tuned for more information on that.

Rock 101 Groups Are Returning In-Person!

Starting at the end of August, we are ramping up our Rock 101 groups IN PERSON!
We are very excited to have our Rock 101 groups heading back to the school.  These will be smaller groups than before to ensure we can be safe and socially distant while playing so space will be limited in each class but we will try to set up as many classes as we need to accommodate demand.
To welcome you back we are going to offer a Free Rock 101 class at the end of August for those who are interested in signing up or re-joining us!  Stay tuned for an email about this coming soon.
In the meanitme, please call the school @ 301-589-7625 for more information! Our Studio Manager, Rob Brewsaugh will be available to answer any questions or concerns you may have going forward.

School of Rock All-Stars Perform a Classic Song With Skip Marley!

Have you seen this collaboration from our School of Rock All-Stars with none other than the grandson of Bob Marley, Skip Marley! The video below shows Skip Marley and our awesome SOR All-Stars singing the classic song, Three Little Birds.  The Allstars didn't get to do their tour this summer but they did participate in a few recordings which we hope to see more of coming out soon.

Our Adult Rock Band Program Is Returning Soon

We are thrilled to announce that we will be offering our Adult Rock Band program once again and in person starting in September.  We are trying to gauge the number of adult student we will need to accommodate so if you are interested, please shoot us an email.  Like our Performance Program, these will be small, socially distant rehearsal band groups, "pods" if you will, and we will stretch out the season a bit longer and shoot for a performance before Thanksgiving.  Email us on silverspring@schoolofrock.com to let us know if you are interested and we will make sure you get the details and sign up info.

Learn How to Write Songs in Our Online Classes

Creating original songs can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences for musicians. Our *NEW* Songwriting Program teaches the fundamentals of songwriting, arrangement and music theory, and helps students compose original works. Students have one weekly private lesson on an instrument of their choice where they learn concepts, technique and theory. These principles are then applied in weekly group lessons where students work together on songwriting exercises and lyrical workshops. Every few months, Songwriting Program students take the stage to perform or band together to record their original songs. Students taking the Songwriting Program online will remotely record their original songs to produce a demo of the class's music.
There is still time to sign up for this awesome program!! This program is for students ages 10 to 18 who have some instrument experience. Click the button below for more information on how to sign up!

One Spot Still Available in our  *NEW* ONLINE Epic Albums  Program

Mike Ruby, instructor extraordiaire from our Vienna location, will be leading this new program that gets students learning to rock as a band in a recording environment. Students will recreate an Epic Album - this time it's The Cranberries debut album Everybody's Doing It, So Why Can't We - and will learn not only the music but how they got their sound and final recordings.  No special equipment required and students can dive as deeply as they like into the tech side as the desire or simply have fun rocking the tunes.
About Mike... He is a professional bassist and educator. Having recently moved to the DC area, Mike played and taught in Chicago for 10 years, after graduating Columbia College with a BA in Music. While in Chicago, Mike recorded with and co-produced hip-hop project House Of Whales. He also played in numerous bands that played genres ranging from indie rock to blues. Mike has had the pleasure of opening for B.B. King and studying with musicians such as Joan Osborne, Christian McBride, Nicholas Tremulis and Chuck Webb. Mike is excited to share his expertise and excitement for this fun recording project with the SOR DC Area students.
