Our Jantacular Jeopardy prize winner!  Stella!

Thanks to all that took part in all the fun during our Jantacular first week of 2021 - it was Jantastic!
During the week we played Jeopardy and one student from each of the competing schools (Vienna, Ashburn and Silver Spring) was the lucky winner of a She Rocks VIP box that was chock full of goodies from many different music vendors.  This box was hard to get into - Congrats Stella!

We're Adding New Rock 101 & Rookies Classes!

In January we  quickly filled up our first new Rookies class but are excited to say that we have added another to the schedule which still has a few open spots. Contact us if you have a 1st or 2nd Grader that you want to get in on the action.  Our new Rock 101 Class has already choosen a name for themselves -The Mangos - and are ready to Rock.  If your student's instructor has spoken to them about being ready to join a group and we haven't reached out to you yet, don't hesitate to contact us first.  The progress you witness is pretty amazing once they've joined a group so don't wait! If you think its time to add a group experience to help your child go to the next level in their musical skill, let us know. Space is truly limited as we keep these classes small.  Call Rose on 301-589-7625.

"Someone" has joined your meeting room"...but we don't know who...

Our staff and your child's safety is important to us. Please be sure that the name on your zoom account is you or your child's name so that we feel comfortable admitting them into their lesson rooms.  TIA!

We are as Excited About the Vaccine as You Are! But, Safety Is Still Our Top Priority

Creating a COVID-19 safe environment has been and remains our #1 priority for students and staff when they are in the building.  We know that many of our students just want to come in person and we are doing all the safety protocols to ensure we are providing a safe environment to rock.
  • We require masks while in the building
  • All persons entering the school are given a symptom and temperature check
  • All persons entering the school immediately wash their hands and hand sanitizer is used frequently
  • We keep the number of people in our building at any given time to levels lower than required
  • We maintain social distancing at all times
  • We have barriers between vocalists and the band in our groups and a barrier is in all lessons
  • We disinfect all high touch surfaces with hospital grade disinfectant using a special misting tool that gets in every crevice, nook and cranny, and disinfect cases that our brought in by students when they arrive.
In other words, we're serious about safety!  If you think your child might do better in person, give us a call and let's give it a try.  You may also schedule a time to come see it all in person to gauge your comfort level.

Inclement Weather Closures

Let it snow!  If you take your lesson in person or have a group that rehearses in person, please take note of how we will handle things.
On the day in question, we will determine if our staff can come in and return home safely, particularly for groups.  Often the timing of the storm allows us to continue our in person operations.  If you feel the roads are not safe and we are open, you may opt to take your in person lesson online for that day, just let us know.  We will post up on our FB  page if there's a closure and send an email if there are any changes to the in person groups on that day.  If you have a question shoot us an email, check social media, or give us a call before you head out.

School of Rock Awarded a U.S. Patent for our Revolutionary Method

Student Spotlight of the Month - Meet Will

Will joined School of Rock in the summer of 2019.  His lessons instructor Neel says he is doing great in the Songwriting programming and is into the technical work of Math Rock (a style of rock music characterized by complex rhythmic and instrumental patterns).  He submitted this photo of himself at home looking like he's ready to zoom into his next online lesson with Neel.
How would you say your playing has changed since joining SoR?
I have learned more about music theory and have much better practice habits.
What are your musical influences?
Mario Camarena of Chon and Ray Toro of My Chemical Romance
What do you like about School of Rock?
The community.  Everyone is likeminded. Everyone likes Rock music so its only people like you.
What has been your favorite show at School of Rock, Neel says you were in Hella Mega?
Yeah, the Hella Mega show had my favorite bands in it. Green Day, Fallout Boy and Weezer so yeah, that one was my favorite.  Brooks and Jaime did that show.  I might do a show this coming season too.
Speaking of instructors you've worked with, Anything you'd like to say about your current guitar instructor Neel?
Neel has a really good ear and he's good at breaking down a song and explaining theory.
What advice do you have for new students?
Practice with a metronome.

THOUGHTS FROM THE MOTHERSHIP

with our Lead Instructor Brooks

DYNAMICS -  Play like you mean it! Dynamics (or volume level) can make the difference between a setlist standout and a performance that falls flat. One of the easiest and best ways to display confidence as a musician is to make sure you can be heard loudly and clearly by everyone in the room, so play like you want people to hear you! When it comes to dynamics, every song should be a journey that creates an emotional impact with the audience. Think how boring it is to listen to something that just has one sound level and work to put some variation in your playing.
Talk with your instructor or show director about what parts of a song should be louder and which should feel softer. You can learn how to change the dynamics of your playing by attacking the strings with more confidence, projecting into the microphone, or hitting the drums differently in different sections of a song. Explore how things like tone can affect the intensity of a song without changing the volume level. Developing a mastery over dynamics can take every song you play to the next level!
