Oregon Sick Leave
Oregon Sick Leave is here! As a reminder, effective 1/1/16 all employees now accrue sick leave at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked and up to 40 hours per year.

American Heart Association Heart Walk
Did you know that heart disease is the #1 killer in the US? It's a scary statistic but there is something you can do to help! The Heart Walk is your opportunity to not only raise money for this life saving cause but it also puts you on the path to maintaining your own heart health. Please join us for this fun event for all ages! The walk is Saturday, May 21st at Portland International Raceway beginning at 10am.

City of Portland; Ban the Box
The City of Portland has approved a ban the box ordinance related to criminal background checks. You may remember a similar ordinance that was passed by the State of Oregon- this recent update from the City takes that one step farther. The City's ordinance prevents employers from asking about criminal history until a contingent offer of employment has been extended while the State's ordinance requires employers to wait until the interview stage before asking about criminal history.

So how does this effect us at PSU? We are not exempt from the City's ordinance, however, this won't change our practice much. A verbal or formal offer will need to be extended before asking a candidate to complete the background check release form. We will still need to run the background check and have the clear results returned prior to the first day of work.
