CCAC Hears From Magellan Development Group President David Carlins, Highlighting the Vista Tower Project
CCAC would like to thank David Carlins, President of Magellan Development Group L.L.C. for hosting CCAC’s monthly luncheon on Tuesday, May 9th at their newest development, the Vista Tower Sales Gallery.  Carlins discussed the development of the Vista Tower, his experiences in securing foreign real estate investment to fund the new Vista Tower Project, and the cultural barriers between China and the United States.
The Vista Tower Project, slated to be completed in 2020, will be the 3rd largest building in Chicago. Overlooking the 6-acre Park at Lakeshore East, the Vista Tower will be a focal point for everyone in the neighborhood. The building is centrally located and will have convenient access to everything including Maggie Daley Park, Millennium Park, lakefront, Riverwalk, the Loop, Chicago Business District and will connect to the Chicago Pedway system.
(L:R) Greg Hummel, Partner, Bryan Cave LLP; David Carlins, President, Magellan Development Group LLC; Kelly O'Brien, Executive Director, CCAC; and Steve Galler, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, The Habitat Company.
Designed by Studio Gang, Vista Tower will rise 100-stories. The elegant design of the building creates the illusion that you are seeing three towers, when in fact, there is only one tower. The bottom 12 floors of Vista Tower are dedicated to the Wanda Vista Hotel. The five-star hotel containing approximately 200 rooms, is the first of its kind in America. Residents will have access to a wide range of amenities including an indoor pool, full spa including gardens, fine dining restaurants, and recreational facilities. This development is expected to create over 2,000 construction jobs, and over 500 permanent on-site jobs.
Our members were pleased to visit the Vista Tower Sales Gallery. The 10,000-square foot space offered our members & potential residents an in-depth look at the building and its luxurious accommodations. The Vista Tower Sales Gallery has a full model kitchen, full model master bathroom and a viewing room, depicting the views from 16 different elevations, both day and night.
Carlins shared with the group, the joint processes to secure real estate investments with his international partner, Wanda Group, a Chinese private developer corporation.  The economic, political, and global obstacles that Magellan Development Group overcame required tremendous vision, determination, and innovation. Limited foreign investments for housing developments in Chicago displayed the necessity and promising opportunities that a globalized economy can present to promote housing development in U.S. cities.  Carlins also discussed the process of working with the City, on the various institutional procedures that development projects are subjected to routinely, such as notifying city officials, and receiving clearances for zoning and land use regulations.
As Carlins concluded, he explained how the site and design selection for Vista Tower were integral components in making the project possible and marketable for foreign investment. He encouraged our members to continue the pursuit of the broader global market, in their respective fields, to enhance Chicago’s national competitiveness.

Connector Project Manager Featured In Crain's Article: The Surprise in Chicago's Latest Census Talley
Political Columnist, Greg Hinz, published an article in Crain's Magazine on May 26, 2017 titled, "The Surprise in Chicago's Latest Census Tally." In the article, Hinz stated the new Census shows large American cities, such as Chicago has lost population three years in a row.
Hinz verified this information with local demographer and CCAC consultant, Ed Zotti.
"According to Ed Zotti, who works with the Central Area Committee on demographic and transportation matters, Chicago looks much worse than Los Angeles and New York if you look at overall population. Specifically, according to American Community Survey data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, the city population grew just 0.5 percent between 2010 and 2015, a fraction of the 3.4 percent rise in Los Angeles and the 4.3 percent pop in New York City."
CCAC is proud to have Ed Zotti on our team as the Connector Project Manager and author of the Connector White Paper.
