ADVANCING CAMPUS CLIMATE AND ACCOUNTABILITY
McGowan named to Vice President position
Texas A&M President M. Katherine Banks on June 2 announced that Annie S. McGowan had been named vice president and associate provost for diversity, effective immediately.
McGowan had served as interim since Dec. 1, 2020. Previously, McGowan was associate dean for undergraduate programs at Texas A&M’s Mays Business School, where she holds the Bill and Gina Flores Professorship in Business. She also served as assistant dean for diversity and inclusion at Mays from 2016 to 2018.

KAMU TV | FM
Mr. Douglas Walker ‘89 is the Executive Director of KAMU Educational Broadcast Services at Texas A&M University. KAMU is Texas A&M’s public broadcasting station, providing TV and FM service to the Texas A&M community and the Brazos Valley. Mr. Walker works in coordination with the Division of Marketing & Communications to help guide strategic planning, visioning and management of the university’s TV and radio station, while improving its support for the educational mission, as well as its statewide and regional mission in public service. We spoke to Mr. Walker about the importance of including programming that is inclusive and respectful of cultures and upcoming programming regarding Texas history and Juneteenth.

OFFICE FOR DIVERSITY SPOTLIGHTWelcome to the Office for Diversity
The Office for Diversity has hired Dr. Michael A. Dewsnap, Executive Director of the Learning Environment Engagement Program (LEEP) at Texas A&M University. Dr. Dewsnap is an Instructional Assistant Professor in the department of Humanities in Medicine at Texas A&M University College of Medicine where he teaches and is engaged in scholarly activity around leadership in medicine. His most recent publication is The Lived Experience of Medical Training and Emotional Intelligence which was co-authored with a faculty from Mass General Hospital and a Chief Medical Officer at a regional health care system in Texas.
Dr. Dewsnap earned his MS.Ed. in Educational Administration from Baylor University and his Ph.D. in Education and Human Resource Studies with a specialization in Higher Education from Colorado State University.

PRODUCING OUTSTANDING SCHOLARSHIPOpen Access Resources
Dr. Gabriela C. Zapata is a former Associate Professor in the Department of Hispanic Studies and ADVANCE Administrative Fellow in the Office for Diversity at Texas A&M University.
Dr. Zapata is the author of the newly published book, Learning by Design and Second Language Teaching: Theory, Research, and Practice. Throughout the volume, Dr. Zapata has emphasized the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in second language education, highlighting the need for inclusive practices and critical approaches to teaching. CONNECTING THOSE ADVANCING CAMPUS CLIMATEThe Student Diversity Advisory Council (SDAC) is a university-wide organization that serves as a student advisory board to the Office for Diversity. The SDAC serves as a liaison between campus communities and university administration in regards to diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and practices. ACES AWARDS CEREMONYThe Accountability, Climate, and Equity (ACE) Awards, formerly known as the Diversity Awards, were renamed in 2016 in the spirit of the goals of the Texas A&M University Diversity Plan.
The ACE Awards acknowledge and honor students, faculty, and staff and their demonstrated commitment to Texas A&M’s Core Value of RESPECT. ACE Awards recipients promote respectful treatment of others, affirm and encourage individuals to take pride in their social and cultural identities, and include everyone in their definition of the “Aggie Family.” The ACE Awards are sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, the Office for Diversity, the Department of Multicultural Services, Disability Resources, the Women’s Resource Center, Aggie Allies, the LGBTQ+ Pride Center, Health Promotion, the Student Government Association Diversity Commission, and Campus Ministry Association.

Texas A&M has issued COVID-19 guidance to enhance the safety of those returning to campus. Free testing is available for all students, faculty, and staff who have symptoms or have been in close contact with known or suspected cases. The tests provided through this program are mouth swab tests that do not require assistance. More information can be found at the Student Health Services website.
