The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications celebrated doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degree graduates on Saturday, May 11 at the Lied Center. After the ceremony, graduates and families attended a reception at Stauffer-Flint Hall. A recording of the ceremony is available on the Lied Center website. JMC School hands out end-of-the-year awards: Dean Ann Brill announced the recipients of four awards designated for JMC School faculty and staff at last Monday’s end-of-the-year faculty and staff meeting. A brief description of each award and its recipient is below:

Ann and Jack Bowling Family Excellence in Teaching Award: Established in 2023 to honor faculty members making outstanding contributions to students’ education, careers and lives.
- 2024 Recipient: Full Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon

John Katich Award for Creativity: Awarded to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member in the School who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas.

Kathleen Dole-Airoldi Research Achievement Award: Established in 2024 to recognize a full-time faculty member who has made significant contributions to the field of journalism and mass communications through their research or creative work.

- Outstanding Staff Award: Established in 2024 to honor a JMC or JMC-affiliated full-time staff member who has made significant contributions to the School.

JMC 640 students in Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin’s campaigns section successfully presented their promotional planning ideas to Kansas City nonprofit Steps of Faith on May 2. Steps of Faith provides no-cost prosthetic care for under-insured and uninsured amputees, and hosts THUNDERGONG! an annual fundraising concert in the fall.

JMC 640 students in Assistant Professor of the Practice Alex Treaster’s campaigns section successfully presented their campaign and presented to C You in The Major Leagues Foundation on May 2. The nonprofit organization founded by former Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore committed to supporting children and families in crisis and developing future character-driven leaders.

Kansan Editor staff applications are now open for the 2024-25 academic year. We are looking for news-driven individuals who are interested in breaking news, arts & culture, men’s and women’s sports, video, audio and graphics. These are yearlong positions, and some are paid positions! As the Audience Engagement Editor, you will play a crucial role in connecting our content with our audience. Responsibilities include overseeing our social media channels, creating content to promote articles, engaging with our audience on social platforms, regularly analyzing audience engagement, creating monthly analytic reports, posting sponsored content and working closely with the business team. Assistant Professor Steve Bien-Aimé co-authored a presentation that was a part of UNESCO's World Press Freedom Day festivities in Chile from May 2-4. Marisa Porto from the University of North Carolina presented "Artificial intelligence and aggregation, and the danger this combination will pose to the future of the journalism business model" during the "Challenges and risks ahead in the practice of journalism" session.

Lecturer Gerri Berendzen presented a session May 10 for the Lawrence Public Library’s “A Grain of Salt” series. The four-part series, part of the library’s Tech Club offerings, is examining media and the internet from the point of view of verifying truth, understanding bias, and avoiding dangerous scams and posts. Berendzen talked about fact verification and offered methods to make sure the information you are looking at online is credible.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman will be expanding her Reviving Rural News experiment this summer by partnering with the Custer County Chief in Nebraska to change its business model.
A recent article published in WebMD quoted Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin and described findings from his study that tested two-sided narrative conversion messages among unvaccinated U.S. adults.
