Greetings from the Director, The spring 2023 semester has begun and promises to be an exciting one for the LSU School of Kinesiology. There are five ongoing faculty searches to fill vacant positions. We have attracted high-quality applicants and are currently conducting interviews. Our student population continues to grow in both the BS in Kinesiology and the BS in Sport Administration, so we will welcome additional faculty to help us meet student needs.
We are also looking forward to returning to Huey P. Long Field House. We had hoped to move back to our home in early spring, but we will not be able to move back until the end of the spring semester. The renovation is long overdue, and we anticipate that the first phase will be completed in April. That includes the Ochsner Wellness Center, which is being constructed in what was the gymnasium space; the ballroom, which has been restored to its original state; the Dr. Monroe J. Rathbone & Mrs. Barbara F. Rathbone Human Anatomy & Cadaver Laboratory; new and/or renovated office space for faculty; and state-of-the-art research laboratories that will support for faculty research and also provided enhanced instruction for our students. We will have some additional classroom space, including a 150-seat lecture hall, in phase one, but the classroom wing that is being situated in the old racquet ball court area will be completed in phase two.
Over the last two years, we've held planning meetings, building tours, a beam signing event, and much more to return the Field House to not only its former glory, but to also usher in a new era for this historic building. You can read more about the restoration here. Housed within this building will be the School of Kinesiology, the School of Social Work, and the College of Human Sciences & Education's student services, recruiting services, and administration, fostering collaboration and dedication to enhance the health and wellness of society through teaching, research, and outreach programs.
As we near the completion of these renovations, be on the lookout for details regarding when the Field House will be open for visitors. We cannot wait for you to join us in celebrating this historic building.
