Kansas City Star reporter and KU alum Katie Moore spoke to JMC 304 Media Writing for Audiences students on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the Clarkson Gallery. Moore discussed her journalism career and experiences covering the issue of capital punishment in Missouri, including her reporting on the Marcellus Williams case. She offered practical tips and advice to students about how to approach sensitive interviews, and the importance of empathy and persistence in reporting.

The Center for Community Outreach and the Center for Service Learning provide service opportunities for students in a variety of areas.
Calling all internship seekers! The University Career Center’s Internship Fair is coming up soon. On Tuesday, Nov. 12, recruiters from a variety of industries will be available to talk to students about their available internship opportunities. You can also practice your networking skills and talk directly to hiring managers. Students of all majors and class levels are welcome. The fair runs from 2-5 p.m. on the 5th floor of the Kansas Union. See the list of employers and their internship opportunities here.
The Jayhawk Finances office is hosting a Student Loans 101 workshop on Nov. 13 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Pine Room of the Kansas Union. This workshop will provide information about the various types of student loans and options for student loan repayment.
KC Ad Club opens entries for the 2025 American Advertising Awards: The winning student entries get highlighted at the American Advertising Awards Ceremony in Kansas City on Feb. 22. After winning locally, the entries compete in a district competition and then on to nationals. Apply now.

Jayhawk Journalists set to cover the election: Keep an eye out for local and national coverage from our Jayhawk Journalists tomorrow night! Students working for KUJH News and The University Daily Kansan will have election coverage on social platforms and websites. The JMC School Instagram will also feature a behind-the-scenes look at our students producing work throughout the night.

Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon is this year’s recipient of the 2024-2025 Budig Professorship. She will present “Soul of the Story: Writing in the Age of AI,” a lecture on why we write, how we write and why humans are still integral to the writing process on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. in the Clarkson Gallery in Stauffer-Flint Hall. In her lecture, McLendon will discuss what generative AI means for writing, both as a process and as a product. The Gene A. Budig professorships and lecture series were established in 1994 by Budig and his wife, Gretchen.
Lecturer Gerri Berendzen presented two sessions Nov. 1 at the CMA/ACP Fall National College Media Convention in New Orleans. The sessions covered editing topics: Editing Your Own Work and Using Conscious Language. Berendzen also represented ACES: The Society for Editing to promote editing scholarships.
Assistant Professor Judy Watts recently published “Exposure to diverse ethnic-racial media: Black, Latinx, and White Parents’ attitudes toward media-based ethnic-racial socialization” in Communication Research Reports. The project surveyed 367 Black, Latinx, and White parents to assess their attitudes on using media with racially and/or ethnically diverse characters to help children learn about race/ethnic identity. This study was supported by the research cultivation grant from the National Communication Association.
