Basketball games at George Mason are a tradition that the entire Mason Community looks forward to. The games are a great place to socialize, relax, and have some fun! Patriots of all ages show support for their favorite team, sporting our school colors and chanting our fight song as loud as they can. You may be wondering, “How did the traditions surrounding our beloved team begin?” Let's travel back to the year 2006. The beginning of the basketball season was just around the corner, but none of the students seemed to know! Student Government recognized the lack of school spirit and decided to do something about it.

And so, Gold Rush was born! Student Government (SG) created the "Gold Rush" event to foster school spirit at sporting events on our campus. Spreading pride at GMU, SG gave students a Mason gold T-shirt to wear to the first men’s home basketball game of the season. While donning their gold shirts, students marched together to EagleBank Arena to “rush” the student section, flooding the stands with gold and celebrating our beloved Patriots. The now coveted "Gold Rush" T-Shirt is a tradition that continues to this day. As part of the celebration, Patriot Activities Council (PAC) began an adjacent event, once called “Hoopla,” which included Mason-Spirit oriented activities and amusements and added to the spirit of the day.
Today, the tradition continues as SG and PAC collaborate to create an evening of Mason Pride with Gold Rush! Now in its seventeenth consecutive year, Student Government and PAC bring you this year’s Gold Rush on Friday, November 10, 2023 at EagleBank arena before the game begins! Join us from 5:30-7:00pm to grab your free T-shirt and join in on the fun! Supplies are limited, so get there early. When doors open for the big game, we will all rush the stands together and the basketball season will begin! Come show your school spirit and get ready for GOLD RUSH!
