Doctoral Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Call for Input
The Doctoral Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging committee is recruiting participants for focus groups and interviews in August through October 2024! The committee is seeking to understand experiences of inclusion/exclusion, discrimination, and belonging among doctoral students at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, particularly focusing on the intersections of race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability. Funded by the Dean’s Fund and in collaboration with the Office of Diversity & Inclusion, the study will offer concrete recommendations to the School for improving the campus climate for all students. GHP Travel Course Information Sessions
Considered part of the spring semester, WinterSession is a special term at the Harvard Chan School that runs for three weeks each January. GHP’s WinterSession travel courses offer graduate students the unique opportunity to apply the academic frameworks and tools learned throughout the year in a dynamic and professional environment by simulating the work they may engage in after graduation. Interested students are invited to attend the following information sessions to learn more about January 2025 course offerings, the application process, and enrollment:

Takemi Program in International Health

The Takemi Program in International Health seeks to improve health and health systems around the world by welcoming mid-career health professionals and scholars to the Harvard Chan School to conduct path-breaking research and develop their leadership skills. Takemi Fellows examine problems of mobilizing, allocating, and managing scarce resources to improve health and of designing effective strategies for disease control and prevention and health promotion, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries. Please join us in welcoming this year's Takemi Fellows!

Fareeda Abo-Rass, MSW, PhD, is a second-year Takemi fellow. She is a social worker and researcher, and she currently works as a postdoctoral fellow at the School for Social Work at Smith College. Her Takemi project is titled “Reconceptualizing Mental Health Literacy in War and Disaster Zones."

Adam Abdullahi, PhD, is a second-year Takemi fellow. He is a Cambridge–Africa research fellow at the University of Cambridge and a junior research faculty member at the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria. His Takemi project is titled “Navigating Future Infectious Disease Threats: Assessing Nigeria’s Preparedness and Response Strategies.”

Francis Anderson Adzei, PhD, is a senior lecturer in the department of health services management at the University of Ghana Business School. He obtained his PhD in public administration from the University of Ghana, his master of philosophy (MPhil) in health promotion from the University of Bergen, Norway, and his bachelor of science in administration (BSc. Admin) in health services administration from the University of Ghana. His Takemi project is titled “Optimizing Health Promotion Strategies for Improved Health System Resource Allocation: Lessons from Ghana’s COVID-19 Pandemic Response.”

Theodros (Tedi) Getachew, PhD, holds a PhD in public health focusing on quality of care provided for sick children in the context of integrated community case management. He is the director of health systems research at the Ethiopian Public Health Research Institute. His Takemi project is titled “Qualtiy, Equity, and Effective Coverage of Child Health Services in Ethiopia.”

Daisuke Kato, MD, PhD, is a family physician and holds a PhD in medicine. He serves as a part-time lecturer in the department of family medicine at Mie University Graduate School of Medicine and as a project researcher at the Center for Preventive Medical Sciences, Chiba University. His Takemi project is titled “Eliminating Social Isolation of Older Persons and Reducing Regional Health Inequities: Towards Age-Friendly Cities With a Focus on Social Well-Being.”

Yoshitaka Nishikawa, MD, PhD, is an epidemiologist and assistant professor at the Kyoto University School of Public Health. For more than ten years, he has worked as a physician in the disaster-affected area of Fukushima, Japan, and focused on disaster risk reduction research. His Takemi project is titled “Stable Iodine Implementation as a Thyroid Protection Measure in Radiation Emergencies.”

Anya P.G.F. Vieira Meyer, MD, is a senior researcher at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz Ceará and professor at the Centro Universario Christo. She graduated in dentistry from the Federal University of Ceará and holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and an MSc from the University of London. Her Takemi project is titled “A Longitudinal Study of the Effects of Violence and COVID-19 on the Mental Health and Work Performance of Community Health Agents in Northeastern Brazil: Implications for Public Policy and Programs.”

Camila Volij, MD, is a physician who graduated from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine (UBA) in 2015 and completed her residency training program at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires (HIBA), specializing in family medicine, in 2019. She currently works as a family doctor and researcher at HIBA and as a junior researcher at the Center for Implementation and Innovation in Health Policies (IECS). Her Takemi project is titled “Policy Analysis of Cervical Cancer Access and Effective Coverage Across the Continuum of Care in Argentina.”

Jie (Jane) Zhao, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor at the School of Public Health, University of Hong Kong. She also coordinates a large elderly cohort in Hong Kong, which includes about 180,000 elderly people across 18 districts. Her Takemi project is titled “Building Prediction Models for Depression Based on Multi-Cohorts With Diverse Socio-Economic Conditions in Asia.”

High Quality Health Systems: Assessing Performance and Improving at Scale
This one-week course will run from October 21 to 25, 2024 and will review the conceptual frameworks of health systems and quality of care and discuss how these can be used to organize measurement and performance assessment. This course will be led by Margaret Kruk, professor of health systems, and Diana Bowser, associate dean for research and integrated science at the Boston College Connell School of Nursing. 2025–2026 HBNU Fogarty Global Health Fellowship
The HBNU Fogarty Global Health Training Program provides one-year mentored research fellowship opportunities in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) for PhD candidates, medical students, and postdoctoral candidates from the U.S. and LMICs. The program supports research in areas of interest including HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases, mental health, maternal and child health and nutrition, and more. 2025–2026 Takemi Program in International Health Fellowship
The Takemi Program recruits a small group of mid-career researchers and professionals to spend an academic year at the Harvard Chan School each year. The Takemi Program provides participants with the space, time, and flexibility to enhance their capacity for research and leadership, by providing two key resources: the weekly Takemi seminar series and expert faculty members. FXB Center Child Protection Certificate Program
The FXB Center for Health & Human Rights at Harvard University is now accepting applications for the 2024-2025 Child Protection Certificate cohort. This interdisciplinary program incorporates ongoing child protection research and practice grounded in field-based realities and takes into account the expertise of UNICEF, a University-wide faculty steering committee, and external child protection experts. Harvard graduate students across all schools and degree programs may apply, but admission is limited to 30 individuals. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis but interested students are advised to apply early. Visit the certificate program website to learn more and apply.
