Tips for Grads: Effective online communication and networking

Interpersonal Effectiveness
This week’s Tips for Grads dives into how you can become an effective online communicator and how you can successfully network with your cohort during the break.
How to communicate effectively:
  1. Be curious. Reach out to students in your cohort and ask them questions about themselves, their interests, and what their plans are. Then, remember to share a little bit about yourself as well. Try an approach of networking through authentic connections.
  2. Offer value before asking for it. Let other students in your cohort know the ways you can help them, and in return it will make it easier to ask for help from them.
  3. Follow up. Thank your classmates and professors for a great semester and any projects or questions they helped you with. Your politeness will be remembered and it will make them more likely to connect with you in the future.
How to perfect your writing skills:
As an online student, almost all of your communication will involve writing. That's why it's crucial you develop your writing skills so you can communicate more effectively with other students and professionals. Here are two quick ways you can improve your writing:
  • Research and understand the individual or audience you are trying to communicate with. Then you can practice tailoring your message to that person's specific interests or knowledge background.
  • Seek a professional opinion, such as by setting up a Skype appointment with UW's Writing Center. The Writing Center can help with resumes, CVs, and more.
Online resources to use for better networking
  • Badger Bridge. Connect with Badger alumni in your field and in your area where you live and work.
  • LinkedIn. Create a professional online profile to connect with other people in your cohort outside of UW–Madison's classroom platforms.
  • Handshake. Search UW–Madison-approved employers and learn more about available job opportunities and internships.
Bonus: Build your networking confidence
