Tips for Grads: Start preparing for the fall

As we near the halfway point of summer, it’s important to start preparing for a successful fall semester. You still have plenty of time to lounge in the sun, but consider the following tips as temperatures begin to drop.

• Review the details. Did you move or do you plan to move this summer? Do you have a new phone number? Login to my.wisc.edu to make sure all of your personal details are current. The Office of the Registrar provides a guide to updating your contact information.
• Plan ahead. Do you know what courses you are taking in the fall? Now might be a good time to start to brush up on those subjects or prepare to learn something new. Check out library.wisc.edu to see what articles, books, and more you may be able to access related to your course subjects.
• Do what you love. Did you pick up a cool hobby this summer? The start of a new academic year does not mean you need to drop everything you love to do. Make sure you budget these activities into your fall semester. Add that new hobby to your academic planner as you would an assignment – make sure to check it off, too! It’s all about balance!

Professional and Career Development: Improve your mentoring skills

Mentorship is crucial to an individual’s personal and professional growth. This webinar from the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (NCFDD) focuses on how you can learn to mentor efficiently. Attend the webinar “Mentorship: Efficient and Effective Practices” on Tuesday, July 19 from 1 to 2 pm online. Start a free NCFDD account to register. 

Wellness: Mental health services available to all

University Health Services (UHS) Mental Health Services has several support options available to all students, regardless of location or eligibility for services at UHS during the summer. These virtual spaces are facilitated by UHS mental health providers.You can also contact the Mental Health Services crisis line at 608-265-5600.

The Drop-In Survivor Support Group is a space for UW–Madison student survivors to connect with peers and offer mutual support in a confidential and safe environment. 

• Tuesdays | 1 - 2:30 pm CST | Register for the Tuesday drop-in group. 
• Fridays | 10:30 am - noon CST | Register for the Friday drop-in group. 

Let’s Talk is a program for UW–Madison students that provides easy access to informal and confidential support and consultation with counselors from UHS Mental Health Services. Register for a Let’s Talk session.

Creating an Individual Development Plan (IDP)
Wednesday, July 13 | 1 - 2:30 pm

Creating an individual development plan (IDP) encourages you to think about what you need to do next -- and over the next few years -- so that you achieve your goals. We will discuss how to define achievable goals, identify resources, and develop strategies for implementing and sustaining your plans. Participants will begin to create a personalized plan that takes into account career interests and addresses the development of knowledge and skills for professional growth.

How to Email Like a Professional

Wednesday, August 3 | 4 - 5:30 pm

Want to demonstrate your good “communication skills” to a potential employer? Need to request an extension or letter of recommendation from a professor? Interested in learning how to express your ideas concisely to peers, supervisors, and instructors? In this workshop, we’ll talk about how to compose professionally effective emails. Along the way, we’ll have fun looking at examples of what not to do, and we’ll address your specific questions, scenarios, and concerns.
