Hi there,
Greetings! In this issue, we are excited to introduce a new space, some new ideas, and many new ways to connect.
A few reminders for the month:
  • Passport services are available by appointment only. Because expedited service is unavailable at this time, apply now if you plan to study or travel abroad during the 2020-21 school year. Email Global@MiamiOH.edu or phone 513-529-8600 to set up your appointment.
  • Applications are open for Winter and Summer 2021 Faculty-Led programming, and new workshops are still being added, including within MiamiConnects, our new virtual option. Head over to Education Abroad and #FindYourPlace.
  • National Hispanic-Latino American Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) offers the chance to learn more about the valuable contributions of the Latin American, Latino and Caribbean peoples and cultures. Although the UniDiversity Festival has been canceled this year, we invite you to connect through our virtual events. Visit MiamiOH.edu/UniDiversity for details!
  • Remote advising appointments will continue to be available through fall semster for both Education Abroad and International Student and Scholar Services. Staff can be reached by email or phone. For general information, reach out to global@miamioh.edu or call our main line at (513) 529-8600.

Help Us Plan the ISC!

International Student and Scholar Services is excited to announce the opening of the International Student Center! Our hope is that this space, located in MacMillan Hall 017, will provide a boost in support for the international community who call Miami and Oxford home and help build a more inclusive global community.

We want to know what an International Student Center (ISC) means to the Miami community. Please complete this survey and help shape the future of the ISC!

We're looking forward to an in-person grand opening in the future, but in accordance with university health protocols at this time, all visitors must make an appointment in order to tour the ISC. Visit MiamiOH.edu/ISC to learn more.

How a Global Mindset Helps a Miami Alum Cultivate Social Justice
Grace Sonderman graduated from Miami in May, 2020 with double majors in Nutrition and Public Health and a minor in Global Health. Among her many achievements at Miami, Sonderman was the first student to earn the Global Readiness Certificate, offered through the Center for American and World Cultures.
Currently serving as an AmeriCorps Service Member in western Colorado, Sonderman works at a farm that grows fresh produce for organizations that work to alleviate food insecurity. She recently took a few moments to reflect on how her international experiences at Miami made a difference in her career, and led to her work with AmeriCorps.

Some Things Never Change!

This semester may be different due to COVID, but the students' experience so far is in many ways the same as the Study, Engage, Travel experience of their MUDEC predecessors!
Discovery Tours are playing a more important role than ever this semester, and are made possible thanks to the generous contributions of MUDEC Alumni.
The second Discovery Tour of the semester took students to the incredible gardens of Grand-Château d'Ansembourg and the medieval Useldange Castle, before ending back in Lux City to ride the temporary Ferris Wheel set up in the Kinnekswiss Parc, Luxembourg.
If you'd like to study, engage, and travel at MUDEC, Spring MUDEC applications are due October 30. Visit MiamiOH.edu/MUDEC to learn more.

  • Before working in International Education, I held the following jobs: Cashier, Nanny, Parking Lot Attendant (at a concert venue - free concerts!), Travel Agent, Mental Health Care Specialist, Activities Coordinator, English Language Teacher.
  • I have two sisters, one older and one younger, and I'm a proud aunt of two nieces (22 and 16 years old).

  • I loved penguins before "March of the Penguins" and "Happy Feet." I've seen a penguin parade in Edinburgh, Scotland, watched Blue Penguins roll in on the waves in Dunedin, NZ, and served as a volunteer feeding (and cleaning up after!) them in the Indianapolis Zoo.
  • As a resident of Richmond, Indiana, I drive by State Parks on every route I take for my commute and often stop to hike, kayak or shoot archery. I also enjoy roller skating in the Oxford Community Park.
  • I've been an International Student Advisor for 15 years, but this is my first year at Miami. While COVID-19 has made it rather challenging, I love it here and can't wait to meet everyone in person!
  • Even though many of you are not here and we're doing remote meetings, we are here for youplease don't hesitate to reach out!
