Important Deadlines
Applying for a semester or year-long program is a multi-step process that begins the academic year before you are interested in going abroad. Planning early is essential no matter when you decide to go.
View our Education Abroad Timeline for an overview of the application process and timeline, but note it is not meant to be a comprehensive guide. Be sure to read through the information below, as well as the Tufts Programs Application page or the External Programs Application page for additional details about the application process.
November 1: Register Your Intent to Study Abroad - REQUIRED
  • Complete your intent form in the academic year prior to going abroad, i.e., submit by November 1, 2022 to study abroad Fall 2023, Spring 2024, or Full Year 2023-2024.
  • Submitting an Intent to Study Abroad Form is a mandatory step to study abroad; students who do not register their intent by the Nov. 1 deadline will not be invited to the application phase of the process and will become ineligible for further consideration.
  • Registration of intent is non-binding; however, you must submit if you are considering studying abroad.
  • Students who register their intent to study abroad will not receive an on-campus housing lottery number for that academic year. You can choose to be placed on a waitlist for on-campus housing and additional questions about the waitlist and housing application process should be directed to Residential Life.
December 1: Tufts-in-Oxford Applications Due
  • Applicants to Tufts in Oxford must first interview with Tufts Global Education staff by November 1 of their sophomore year to be eligible. For more information contact Melanie Armstrong.
September – January: Advising Period
February 1: Applications Due
  • Submit your application no later than February 1, 2023, to study abroad in Fall 2023, Spring 2024, or the Full Academic Year 2023-2024 for Tufts Programs Abroad and External Programs.
  • Only students who submitted an Intent to Study Abroad Form may submit an application to Tufts for a Tufts Programs Abroad or approved external option.
Special Considerations: External Program-Specific Applications
Students participating in an approved external program must also apply directly to their approved external program. Visit our external programs application page to learn more about balancing the internal Tufts Global Education deadlines and your chosen external program’s application process.
How Do I Learn More?
Program Options
Students have various options for education abroad, from semester- or year-long programs based at partner universities around the world to short-term global programs in a variety of settings. Most students choose semester- or year-long study abroad during their junior year, but you may also consider going in your sophomore or senior year if that better suits your academic needs. Summer and/or other short-term options abroad can usually take place at any time during your Tufts career.
Tufts Programs Abroad (semester and/or year)
Students attending Tufts Programs Abroad remain enrolled at Tufts, receive Tufts credit for their courses, and are eligible for their full financial-aid package. Check TPA program locations on our website!
External Study Abroad (semester and/or year)
Students from all subjects can explore a wide array of pre-approved external programs across around the globe to find a program that meets their unique academic needs. Students will take a study-abroad leave of absence to participate in an external program, are able to receive transfer credit towards their degree, and eligible to carry federal and state monies on any program with a U.S. school of record (Tufts institutional financial aid is not available for external program use).
Tufts Summer & Winter Programs Abroad
Students may wish to participate in short-term global courses either in place of, or in addition to, a semester- or year-long study abroad experience. Available options arranged by Tufts Global Education vary each year and enable students to take part in global experiences with a specific academic focus, complemented by cultural activities. This upcoming year we are pleased to offer you the following options:
