Hi Student,
As you make final preparations for your Fall 2024 study abroad experience, it’s time to make a plan to vote if you are an eligible voter in the U.S.
Eligible voters who are out of the country on election day have the option to vote by absentee ballot instead of voting in person. People who want to vote absentee are required to apply ahead of time, and states have different deadlines for requesting an absentee ballot and for receiving a completed ballot. Learn more about absentee voting and your state’s deadlines.
Since you will be studying abroad on election day, we encourage you to make plans to vote absentee. Although the election seems far away, international mail can be slow, so ample time is required to make sure your vote is counted! Here are two steps you can take now:
Request your absentee ballot as soon as possible. The Federal Voting Assistance Program’s online tool allows any eligible voter who is abroad on election day to request an absentee ballot from the city or town where they are registered. You can also request an absentee ballot directly from your city or town. Don’t forget to mail in your completed ballot! We recommend mailing it at least two weeks in advance of your state’s absentee ballot return deadline.
