TSA Colleagues Use Teamwork and Networks to Assist a Person in Need
It was nearly 2 a.m. when TSA Atlas officer Joshua Lavadour (he/him) discovered a young woman and her infant asleep and alone in the baggage claim area. Joshua called his lead, Tawan Bernkopf (she/her), to come check on the woman to make sure she was safe and see if she needed assistance.
When she approached the young woman, Tawan discovered she had two toddlers, also asleep, under her blanket. After speaking with the woman, Joshua and Tawan learned that she had no local support system, no food, no supplies and nowhere to go.
Tawan immediately reached out to her network and partners at PDX to help the family in need. TSA Supervisor Angela McLaughlin (she/her) quickly and graciously bought food and water for the toddlers. TSA employee Sean West (he/him) worked to supply the family with diapers, milk and bottles. A USO manager brought coloring books, snacks and drinks, and a Port of Portland police officer contacted local hotels for shelter.
"I can’t say enough about how proud I am that our PDX People pulled together and shared a high level of empathy, self-awareness and kindness to ensure the safety of this family," Tawan shared. "Thanks to everyone’s cooperation, the young lady managed to book a flight and reunite with her family. It goes without saying that the character of a person that helps someone in need says more about you than the person asking for help."
To recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary, we'll hold the next PDX People Customer Service Awards on Tuesday, April 25. To watch, head to the Port of Portland YouTube page on Tuesday, April 25, at noon.
You can also nominate an employee who embodies the PDX People values and serves as a shining example of great customer service for next quarter – submit a nomination now.

What's New with PDX Next: Lost and Found Move and New Route to Main Bag Road
Lost and Found: The Lost and Found office is moving to a new location on Level 1 of the short-term parking garage. This move is part of several changes in baggage claim as we work on upgrades. See the article below for more details on the move.
Main Bag Road: There's also a new route to main bag road from baggage claim. Use door T1861, located between carousels 9 and 10. The previously used door (T1704) will only be accessible for the route between the ticket lobby and main bag road.

Lost and Found Makes Move Next Week
After a one-day closure this Wednesday, April 12, Lost and Found will open in a new location starting Thursday, April 13. To find the new spot, use the south tunnel and take the elk elevators to the transportation plaza on Level 1. When you exit the elevators, turn left and go through the doors; Lost and Found will be the first office you see on the south side. Find out how to be knowledgeable about Lost and Found and help travelers reunite with their misplaced items.

Building Representation and Access Through Art at PDX
"As far as it being a platform for underrepresented artists, PDX couldn’t be a better place." That’s what Portland-based painter Renee Zangara had to say when we asked about her experience showcasing a collection of paintings at the airport.
With its globally diverse community, from the employees who make it run 24 hours a day to the people traveling through, PDX is unlike most other spaces for public art. There's a fundamental belief that everyone has the right to have arts and culture in their community. Part of what art can do for a public space like PDX is humanize it, by sharing artists’ voices, ideas and stories – and we have a responsibility to make sure our collections represent a diversity of voices and experiences.
