In this month's Ed Talk, Vice President Ed Mills replies to a question submitted during the Division Wide Meeting on March 9, 2022.
For the most complete answer, Ed reached out to Human Resources.
Q: Sac State has an exemption from paying Unit 4 Exempt Staff (SSP II) the CA State Minimum Wage for exempt employees ($62k/year), since we fall under Federal Labor Law. Is there anything Sac State can do to help change that inequity?
| |
A: This is a good question as the situation can be confusing. Here is the response we received from HR.
With regard to the California overtime threshold for FLSA Exempt Status, Sac State is considered a State Agency and therefore exempt from some State Labor Codes. For an overtime (FLSA) exemption specifically, State Agencies are subject to the Federal threshold (historically much lower), rather than the state threshold. Also, because most of the positions on campus are covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement, the state overtime threshold does not apply.
We hope this information is helpful. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Thank you,
Classification and Compensation, Human Resources

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month this April, Student Health and Counseling Services is partnering with WEAVE, and our Confidential Campus Advocate, to bring awareness to sexual violence on college campuses and the importance of solidarity with sexual assault survivors. According to RAINN, 1 in every 6 women, 1 in every 10 men, and 21% of TGQN (transgender, genderqueer, nonconforming) college students experience sexual violence. Here at Sac State, we support our survivors. Sexual violence is an issue that impacts all genders and identities, and our community must continue to speak out to help prevent it.
All month long the campus is hosting events for the Hornet community on rape culture, the prevalence of sexual violence, how to support any survivors we know, and how we can work together to keep our community safe. Follow @shcssacstate and @weaveatsacstate on Instagram for educational content and event details.

CSU Young Males of Color Conference
The California State University System has maintained a long-standing commitment to student success and the Graduation Initiative. In an effort to support males of color in higher education, the Young Males of Color Consortium was established in 2017 to advance the goals of the CSU, while bringing together delegates from each of the 23 CSU campuses to implement, improve, and enhance service delivery mechanisms and strategies for increasing retention and graduation. Led by Dr. William Franklin, the Vice President of Student Affairs at CSU Dominguez Hills and Dr. Matthew Smith, Associate Vice President and Dean of Student at CSU Dominguez Hills, the consortium has served in a pivotal role in leveraging best practices and has been a signature leader in training and development.
To support the YMOC’s Consortium efforts, Sacramento State served as the proud host of the CSU Young Men of Color Conference on April 5-7th, 2022 embodying the overall theme of “Beyond the Rhetoric: Eradicating Equity and Opportunity Gaps.” The event kicked off with a networking reception with key stakeholders across the CSU System with a theme of “Networking for Success.” According to Dr. Marcellene Watson-Derbigny, Associate Vice President for Student Retention and Academic Success at CSU Sacramento, “The conference was electrifying and enabled campuses from throughout the CSU system to unite around male student success.” "The multi-day convening amplified the great work of the CSU while imparting strategies for success and student excellence," said Dr. Mills, Vice President of Student Affairs at CSU Sacramento.

CAMP Student, Daniel Gonzalez – Selected for National HEP/CAMP Association Internship in Washington, D.C.
For the second consecutive year, a CAMP student from Sacramento State has been selected to participate in the prestigious National HEP/CAMP Association Internship in Washington, D.C. this summer. First-year CAMP student, Daniel Gonzalez, is one of six college students from across the United States selected to participate in this internship. Gonzalez and five others will receive 10-week placements in congressional offices, the Office of Migrant Education (OME), and the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.
Students from migrant and farm working backgrounds face unique challenges leading up to and during their pursuit of a college degree, such as academic interruption due to housing instability, language barriers, financial stress, and very commonly being the first in their family to go to college. “My background has given me more of a work ethic towards everyday life. As a student from a migrant background, I feel like I have a big mental advantage compared to other students. I take school very seriously because I know the sacrifices that were made to get me here and the significance of getting an education,” Gonzalez said.

Save the Date for Lavender Graduation 2022!
Mark your calendars for Sac State’s 16th annual Lavender Graduation, 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, May 10!
Lavender Graduation was created by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish lesbian, who was denied the opportunity to attend the graduations of her biological children because of her sexual orientation. It was through this experience that she came to understand the pain felt by her students. Encouraged by the University of Michigan Dean of Students, Dr. Sanlo launched the first Lavender Graduation in 1995. At Sacramento State, this annual ceremony honors lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ+), and ally students, and acknowledges their academic achievements and contributions to the campus. Graduating students from all academic levels are welcome to participate and are eligible to receive a rainbow tassel by registering for both Lavender Graduation and Commencement by Friday, April 29. This event is free and open to all members of the campus family. Registration is limited for attendees. Register today!
