HOW TO KEEP YOUR YARD GREEN AND OUR WATERWAYS CLEAN!
Applying too much fertilizer and pesticides could contribute to contaminated stormwater runoff that pollutes our waterways and causes toxic algae blooms.
Here are some tips to help you keep your yard green
and our waterways clean:
- Use a slow-release, phosphorus-free product to reduce the frequency of application. Organic products release slowly
and have less metals. Most of Colorado’s soil does not need additional phosphorus.
- Don’t apply within 75 feet of waterways. Otherwise, fertilizer will most certainly end up in the waterway.
- Don’t fertilize before a storm. It will most likely wash away.
- Fertilize the lawn, not the sidewalk. Sweep up the excess on the sidewalk and in the gutters.
- Don’t feed the storm drain. Excess pesticides, fertilizer, grass clippings, leaves, and other debris get carried directly into our waterways.
