Introducing the new cohort for the Digital & Integrated Marketing Communications master’s program. The fully online program recently had students travel from multiple states, including Mississippi and Texas, attend the in-person orientation. It is one of two opportunities the cohort meets in person. The 19 students will next meet in person during their graduation ceremony in 2028. The students have said starting off in-person helps them form meaningful connections with their fellow classmates, making it easier to complete group projects in the online environment. It also reinforces their decision to attend graduate school by boosting their confidence in pursuing an advanced degree.

STUDENT NEWS & OPPORTUNITIES |
The University Daily Kansan is planning a Spring 2027 launch of a new magazine about Lawrence, for Lawrence and so intimately familiar with Lawrence, it is called LARRY. This is a new student publication. It’s a sort of city magazine, but one with a light, youthful attitude, full of fresh takes on this unique and quirky town. All positions are open for editors, writers, photographers, designers and salespeople. Planning will soon begin for a February launch. Interested students should contact UDK adviser Nick Jungman, nickjungman@ku.edu.
The KU Fashion and Business Organization is looking for students to help produce The Style Society magazine. For more information, go to GroupMe at or Instagram. Applications for the magazine will be opening soon.
All KU students are welcome to join the Dole Institute's Student Advisory Board, where students are brought together through shared interests in politics, bipartisan collaboration, public service, and civic engagement. As an active member of the SAB, you’ll have the opportunity to meet and network with special guests at the Institute’s programs; socialize with fellow Jayhawks, get involved, and give back to the local community; participate in exclusive receptions, free dinners, and programs with special guests, Friends of the Dole Institute, and other students; receive priority when applying for financial assistance for an internship and its student awards; work at the Dole Institute in one of many specialized student positions. Learn more about becoming a member of the SAB by joining our weekly mailing list, visiting our website, or by attending our first meeting of the semester at 5:30 p.m., Sept. 1 at the Dole Institute of Politics. A fall kick-off event is planned for 5:30 p.m., Sept. 3. The event will feature Celia Llopis-Jepsen, creator and host of the environmental podcast ‘Up from the Dust,’ and Gabe Fleisher, author of the political newsletter ‘Wake up to Politics,’ to learn how new media is changing the current journalism landscape.

RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS |
Three JMC faculty members — Professor of the Practice Matt Tidwell, Assistant Professor Vaibhav Diwanji and Assistant Professor of Practice Alex Treaster — will present "Communication as Infrastructure: Rebuilding Trust in a Fragmented World" at the 2026 Heartland Certified Public Manager Conference on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Kansas Union Ballroom. The presentation will be 9:25-11:25 a.m. Expect practical frameworks for three things every organization needs right now: listening first, signaling credibility through message design, and responding effectively when misinformation, trolling or crisis hits.
Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman will be presenting at Democracy Day, hosted by KU's Center for Democratic Governance from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 18, in the Alderson Auditorium of the Kansas Union.
Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon participated in the Summer Mock Study Section as a reviewer for an NIH R21 grant proposing to study communication interventions for elementary students with cognitive disabilities. The event is run by the Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Institute at KU Med to help faculty applying for grants receive detailed feedback before submission.
Lecturer Eric Thomas wrote a column for the Kansas Reflector about Lara Korte, a JMC alum who was fired by the Pentagon last week from her reporting job at Stars and Stripes.
Professor Teri Finneman moderated a panel last week centered on "What Can Journalists Today Learn from the Sage of Emporia?" with JMC alum Clay Wirestone, opinion editor at Kansas Reflector, and Mará Rose Williams, senior opinion columnist of the Kansas City Star leading the conversation. William Allen White, longtime editor of the Emporia Gazette and Pulitzer Prize winner, was known as the Sage of Emporia in the early 1900s. The school is named to honor him.
