email : Webview : Academic Appointment Start Dates Shifting to August 16 this Year

Dear Faculty,

I am pleased to announce that effective Fall 2024, UT Austin will be aligning our academic appointment dates with the start of the academic year. Historically, academic appointments for faculty, TAs and AIs have been begun on the start of the fiscal year (Sept. 1) even though classes begin in mid-August. Asking faculty and graduate students to work in advance of their appointment start date created compliance issues, as well as delays in compensation, insurance coverage and access to university systems.

Beginning Fall 2024, academic appointments will begin on Aug. 16. Faculty, TAs and AIs will receive their first paycheck on Sept. 1 as opposed to Oct. 1. Faculty will experience no delay in TA engagement on the first day of each academic term and will have earlier access to all university systems needed for instruction. Additionally, faculty and graduate student employees will have medical coverage and workers’ compensation coverage effective Aug. 16. Graduate student employees on Academic Blue will have insurance coverage beginning Aug. 1, eliminating the need for gap or supplemental health insurance for new international graduate student employees in eligible jobs.

In order for Fall 2024 appointments to begin on Aug. 16, Summer 2024 will be shortened by two weeks. Guidance on Summer 2024 appointments has been jointly developed with the input of colleges and schools to ensure that faculty and graduate student employees are compensated for their effort. Please review this Faculty FAQ for a summary of changes, benefits and other impacts. If you are a faculty member who has previously used salary spread, you will receive a follow up communication with details on how to manage salary spread in the future.

My office is working closely with the HR professionals in your colleges and schools to implement this change. Together, we have taken every effort to anticipate and address the impact of these appointment changes. If you have any questions not addressed in the provided FAQ document, please first reach out to your local HR representative for assistance. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to implement this important and significant change this summer.
