Applying for an external grant or fellowship? Follow the proposal process

Once you've identified a funding opportunity and are ready to prepare for proposal submission, be sure to follow the steps on our "Start A Proposal" page. We recommend you notify our office 4-6 weeks prior to the funding application deadline, if possible. Learn more about proposal submission on UNCG Scholar.

P2 Collective Scholarship Fellows Program virtual Lunch and Learn, June 3

UNCG’s Institute for Community & Economic Engagement (ICEE) will host a virtual lunch and learn on June 3 from 12 – 1 pm to share information about the upcoming P2 Collective Scholarship Fellows application period. The program supports community-engaged faculty members who work with community partner(s) by providing funding and professional development. Learn more and register.

IRB office drop-in sessions are the first Tuesday of each month, 2-3 PM

The Office of Research Integrity offers a drop-in session for faculty to ask questions about IRB and other matters on the first Tuesday of each month from 2-3 pm in MHRA room 2711. View all UNCG Research events.

Internal Funding

CAS Scholars Travel Fund (STF), apply anytime

Provides up to $750 to full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty so they may present research, scholarship, or creative activity; participate as chairs or panelists; or contribute in other meaningful ways at scholarly meetings in the USA, Mexico, or Canada. Requires a $375 match, which may be met with departmental contribution or external funding. Faculty may apply once per fiscal year. Applications accepted on an ongoing basis. Get the application

External Funding

ARL BAA (Army Research Lab Broad Agency Announcement) for Foundational Research

The Army Research Lab's Broad Agency Announcement (ARL BAA) is a competitive solicitation procedure used to obtain proposals for basic and applied research that support ARL’s mission. Proposals are sought across many disciplines for cutting-edge innovative research that would have a significant impact on enabling new and improved Army operational capabilities and related technologies. Applicants are strongly encouraged to follow this application process:

Review the BAA to find research priorities your work could address. (Topics are meant to be viewed as suggestive. ARL will consider other innovative concepts that further its mission.)
Conduct a preliminary inquiry with an ARL TPOC (Technical Point of Contact). Contact info can be found within the topic description.
Submit a Whitepaper to an ARL TPOC for review.
Submit a Full Proposal.

Simons Foundation Targeted Grants in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences, rolling deadline
Supports high-risk theoretical mathematics, physics and computer science projects of exceptional promise and scientific importance on a case-by-case basis. Provides funding for up to 5 years. There is no recommended or assumed funding level. Applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI), and an LOI may be submitted at any time. Learn more

NSF CAREER program, apply by July 23
NSF’s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education. For tenure-track Assistant Professors. Learn more

NC Biotech Center Translational Research Grants, apply by August 6
Funds projects that explore commercial applications or initiate early commercial development of university-held life sciences inventions. The technology must have potential to solve a real-world problem as a commercial product in the life sciences sector. Learn more

Fulbright U.S. Scholars Program, apply by Sept 15

Offers over 400 opportunities in more than 135 countries around the world for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research and carry out professional projects. Opportunities range from a few months to a full year. Many offer a Flex option. UNCG's Global Engagement Office provides support for applicants. Learn more

Harvard Radcliffe Fellowship, apply by Sept 11 (humanities, social sciences) or Sept 30 (STEM)

Applications now open for fellowship period Sept 2026 - May 2027. Apply as an individual or as group of two people working on the same project. Fellows receive a $78K stipend and $5K for project expenses. Learn more

... when "prior approval" is required to rebudget grant funds?

When a grant is awarded, the funder expects the PI to follow the approved budget. But because circumstances change and budgeting is not perfect, many sponsors allow PIs some flexibility to rebudget grant funds. Some project or budgetary changes can be made at the PI's discretion, but others require "prior approval" from the sponsor. For federal funders, PIs can consult the FDP Prior Approval Matrix to understand the programmatic and budgetary changes for which prior approval is "Required" and those for which the prior approval requirement is "Waived." Federal agencies on the matrix include NSF, DOE, NIH, USDA NIFA, and NASA, among others. For more info, NSF PIs can also consult the NSF PAPPG, X.A3, and NIH PIs can consult the NIH Grants Policy Statement, 8.1.2.

PIs should remember to always double-check the terms and conditions of their particular award, since those supersede any general sponsor policy. UNCG staff from the Office of Sponsored Programs and Contract and Grant Accounting are also available to consult on questions about programmatic or budgetary changes to grant-funded projects.
