let there be new flowering
in the fields let the fields
turn mellow for the men
let the men keep tender
through the time let the time
be wrested from the war
let the war be won
let love be

On the Return of the BOAhemian
|
Dear Reader,
Happy summer and welcome back to The BOAhemian!
It has been nearly five years since our last newsletter and we at BOA Editions are thrilled to share so many exciting updates with you all. However, in light of current circumstances, we must first acknowledge some challenging realities.
BOA Editions is proud to be a small, nonprofit publisher. Unfortunately, BOA is one of the many nonprofits whose NEA grant (our largest source of funding) was rescinded back in early May. While we will continue to press on, now is the time where we must ask for support from our readers and community. As 2026 approaches, so does BOA's 50th anniversary. Our history reflects a deep commitment to meaningful work and enduring partnerships. It is our mission to keep working to support art and artists, poems and poets, and books and their authors; even and especially at a time where federal funding for the arts has all but disappeared. Help us keep this thing going for another 50 years by donating on our website, sharing our books and content on your social media, or purchasing a book (this method of support rewards you instantly!).
Speaking of purchasing BOA books: we have an incredible set of six (six??!!!) recently released books available on our online bookstore that you can order today. Can you read them all before summer's end? Maybe not, but you can try! Purchase our Spring 2025 bundle and when someone asks you what you're reading (which they will, because these covers are STUNNING), you can tell them that you're supporting nonprofit, independent publishing- someone's gotta!
What about after summer's end? Good news- another SIX BOA books are scheduled for Fall 2025 release, starting with Aracelis Girmay's new collection GREEN OF ALL HEADS on September 16th. Pre-order all six to get your hands on these books before anyone else and tell your friends that you supported nonprofit, independent publishing before they did!
Scroll down the rest of this newsletter for more on what BOA has been up to. Between author interviews, awards, a call for submissions, and an upcoming fundraiser, this three-person team stays busy. Show them some love.
Now, for joy! For the love of creation and those who create! For storytelling, for poetry, for putting words to paper! And above all else, for the community we forge through it all. Beauty remains, BOA reader. Don't forget to look for it.
With love,
Callie Updike (Summer Intern) & the entire BOA team

"I think APOSTLE OF DESIRE is what poet James Wright meant when he said he wanted to write the poetry of a grown man. This complex, serious book is about American conduct. It is grown-up and splendid.”
—Dave Smith, Pulitzer Prize finalist
|
| "Aracelis Girmay creates territories of simultaneity and convergence, while pondering death as a communal experience. At last, we have a collection of poetry that talks about death in our intimate language of affections.”
—Mayra Santos-Febres, author of La otra Julia and Boat People

“What a dream to find this sound, to reach & reach again for janan alexandra’s brilliant, steadfast attention – each phrase an altar of life, a route to past-language. Question, exclamation, sorrow, memory. I am more alive to read this poet’s every light & dark.”
—Aracelis Girmay, author of the black maria

|
"Shot through with a mischievous sense of humor and a keen grip on the alienation that permeates modern life, all of these stories coalesce into the revelation that there is a fragile beauty underpinning every moment that we experience. A stunning and utterly original collection.”
—Talia Lakshmi Kolluri, author of What We Fed To The Manticore
