We are excited to welcome you to the expanded St. Johns Library! Join Multnomah County Library for two days of free, fun-filled community events to celebrate, including two artist events hosted by RACC:
Ode to Forest Park: Book Reading with Carson Ellis
Saturday, June 27, 12:30pm-1:30pm
Join us for a cozy and intimate book reading with local author and illustrator Carson Ellis, hosted by the Regional Arts and Culture Council. As part of the St Johns Library renovations, Carson has created a larger-than-life, site-specific digital mural for the new children’s area. Come be immersed into the magical world of Forest Park-inspired critters, creatures, flora and fauna and stay to read with Carson. This event is free and open to all.
Fantastical Alebrijes: Stamping Workshop with Victor Trejo
Sunday, June 28, 12:30pm-2pm
You are invited to join the Regional Arts and Culture Council and local artist Victor Trejo for a stamping workshop in celebration of the new Fantastical Alebrijes sculptures that now adorn the exterior of St Johns Library. Inspired by traditional Mexican folk art, the three characters, Sollín, Maxy and Metzli, are decorated with patterns and symbols inspired by the community. In this hands-on art activity, you’re invited to create your own Alebrijes with the same community-designed stamps which Victor incorporated into the final sculptures. This event is free and open to all.

The Regional Arts & Culture Council (RACC), in partnership with Multnomah County, will soon release a Call for Artists for two exterior mural commissions at the new Sobering & Crisis Stabilization Center, currently under development at 440 SE Stephens Street in Portland’s Central Eastside. The opportunity includes a large-scale mural along SE Grand Avenue and a smaller mural at the facility’s northwest entrance, with combined project budgets exceeding $100,000.

Scheduled to open in 2027, the Sobering & Crisis Stabilization Center will provide critical sobering, withdrawal management, and crisis stabilization services for community members experiencing behavioral health and substance-related crises. Artists are invited to help shape the public identity of this important community resource through thoughtful, trauma-informed artwork that reflects care, dignity, resilience, and the shared commitment to supporting pathways toward recovery and well-being.
