Dear Colleagues,
I’m writing today with a staffing update in Academic Affairs. Jonathan Hanes, Assistant Vice Provost and Institutional Research Director for the Office of Assessment & Institutional Research (OAIR), has accepted a position at another institution, and his last day will be Friday, November 28th.
Jonathan is a UWM alum (PhD ’11, Geography) and joined OAIR in 2013 after serving as an Assistant Professor in Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences at Northern Michigan University. After working in OAIR as a Research Analyst for six years, he became Interim Director in 2019 and full Director in 2020. During his time leading OAIR, he has:

- Led efforts to expand and enhance interactive data visualization tools for campus.

Established OAIR protocols to ensure data accuracy and security.
- Has overseen the incorporation of the Testing Center and Learning Assessment into OAIR.
- Developed and has overseen OAIR support for budget processes and numerous campus initiatives supporting student success and enrollment management.
- Directed institutional research briefs on student success topics to proactively yield insights for UWM.
- Led efforts to ensure OAIR’s official reporting reflected 2030 restructuring and Workday coding.
- Has overseen the development of an Institutional Research Analytics Badge course for faculty and staff.
- Provided data and modeling support for the Chancellor's Committee for Hispanic Serving Initiatives.
- Maintained and oversaw OAIR’s official reporting on student enrollments, retention, and graduation.

The OAIR is a vital part of UWM and something that our entire university relies upon daily to make data-informed decisions, guide change and understand our university community. Our OAIR does exceptional work, and much of that is due to Jonathan’s dedication and hard work. He has led a team that has modeled high-quality work in supporting assessment and institutional research at UWM. I want to extend my appreciation to Jonathan for serving UWM; he leads with excellence and goes above and beyond.
The director of OAIR is a vital part of the university’s mission, and we will begin examining the replacement of this position. A decision regarding an interim director and the process for permanent replacement will be made shortly.
