EDUCATIONAL Opportunities

Coastal Community Resilience Immersive Training Program

This is a 10-week, paid immersive training program that will allow AmeriCorps members to serve as Coastal Community Resilience Assessment Coordinators, working with NC State mentors and community hosts to support communities in eastern North Carolina. Participants will receive training in asset mapping, vulnerability assessments, and community engagement to document climate risks affecting community assets through data and local perspectives.

Students will work in teams, documenting community assets, conducting vulnerability assessments, and actively engaging with local community members. This AmeriCorps position offers a 10-week, 300-hour service term with a $7,000 service contract and an additional $1,565.08 educational award. An additional housing and travel stipend is provided to enrolled NC State students ($3,000). Participants will gain hands-on experience in ArcGIS Online, asset mapping, and resilience planning.

Research Fellowship: USDA Forest Service Social Science Research on Forest Recreation Experiences

The U.S. Forest Service Research and Development will be filling one MS or PhD-level research fellowship in early 2025. The fellow will contribute their social science research skills to studies of experiential qualities of forest-based recreation at landscape scales. Spatially explicit trip reports, in which people describe their recreation experiences, will be one of the primary data sources for this research. The fellow will draw on literature in outdoor recreation, visitor use management, data science, and other fields to develop innovative research approaches to answer questions about when, where, and how often different outdoor recreation experiences occur, and their outcomes for people.

The Scientists in Parks program provides immersive, paid full work experiences with the National Park Service in natural resource fields so the next generation of park stewards—especially those underrepresented in science—have an opportunity to work on important and unique projects while building real-world professional experience and a life-long connection to America’s national parks. The responsibilities include program operation, development and growth, participant satisfaction, participant and member retention, safety, community collaborations, and site supervision. You will be a vital member of the YMCA leadership staff and a highly visible representative of the YMCA mission and core values. In addition, you will be accountable for knowing and properly executing all YMCA policies and procedures.
