SMPA WEEKLY RUNDOWN

FRANK SESNO STEPPING DOWN AS SMPA DIRECTOR TO FOCUS ON PLANET FORWARD, CLIMATE CHANGE, AND MEDIA PROJECTS. 

Over the holiday break, Frank Sesno sent a note to students and faculty letting them know that after 11 years at SMPA he will be stepping down from the director's position after this spring semester. In his note, he expressed that he has various writing and video projects that he wants to focus on and is looking forward to dedicating more of his time to Planet Forward.
"I am intensely proud of SMPA and what we have built here. The exceptional research, teaching, learning, convening, and community create a unique and powerful experience," Frank Sesno said
He will go on sabbatical for a year starting this summer and then return to the faculty after that to teach and concentrate on his passion projects. An announcement will be made in the coming weeks about the interim director.

SMPA WELCOMES VISITING NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PROFESSOR
The School of Media and Public Affairs is proud to announce the inaugural National Geographic Visiting Professor of Science Communication will be award-winning environmental and science journalist Lisa Palmer.
Ms. Palmer will hold office hours in SMPA to work with and mentor students. She will also work with Planet Forward, participate in SMPA events, and serve as a liaison with National Geographic for student opportunities and institutional engagement.

JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP FOR AMERICAN MUSLIMS
The Islamic Scholarship Fund offers scholarships for American Muslim undergraduate and graduate students majoring in Journalism with the goal of increasing representation in media and politics in order to improve public opinion and public policy.

Imani Cheers was on Bloomberg TV last month talking about the 'Balance of Power'.
Silvio Waisbord was published in the International Journal of Communication "On Writing and Academic Conventions", and "La sociedad de la distraccion" (The distraction society) in Argentina's newspaper Clarin. 
Janet Steele gave a keynote speech at a "Festival of religious tolerance"  in Jakarta on the role of media in promoting tolerance in the public sphere, and then moderated a panel of 3 experts, including Zunar, the award-winning Malaysian cartoonist, Andreas Harsono, of Human Rights Watch-Indonesia, and Alyssa Wahid, the daughter of former Indonesian president Abdurrahman Wahid.

The GW Undergraduate Review, GW’s research journal publication, is searching for students who want to publish their undergraduate research work of paper overviews. The deadline for submissions is January 31, 2020.
