DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE NEWSLETTER
November 2025
Message from the Chair: As the holidays arrive, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible momentum and milestones we've achieved this year. |
This summer we proudly welcomed a new class of Emergency Medicine Residents and Fellows, whose energy and passion continue to inspire us. Over the summer, we successfully began staffing the Holy Cross – Salt Lake Emergency Department, expanding access to emergency care for our community.
One of the year's most memorable highlights was celebrating the 20th anniversary of our EM Residency Program during ACEP—right here in Salt Lake City. Reconnecting with alumni from across the country reminds us of the lasting impact and strength of our program.
This year’s ACEP conference saw an outstanding turnout from our faculty, fellows, residents, and EM students, showcasing the depth of talent and collaboration within our teams. We also took time to honor the dedication and excellence of our faculty and staff during the faculty retreat and DOEM social; moments that reaffirm our shared commitment to education, innovation, and compassionate care.
With gratitude for all we've accomplished, we continue to look ahead to build a legacy of excellence in Emergency Medicine!
Dr. Christy Hopkins

Dr. Alex Miller is originally from Santa Fe. Alex completed medical school in New Mexico and residency in Oregon. Since graduating, he has worked in small hospitals in rural counties in Colorado and Oregon. He and his wife Claire moved to Utah in 2023. They have a one-year-old boy, Freddie, and an eight-year-old Lab, Norm.
| |
Dr. Chris Bossart: I am excited to move back to SLC with my family after 10 years at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM. Since my wife (Jerica) and I graduated from medical school at the University of Utah, our family has grown with the adoption of a dog (Chama), and the birth of two daughters (Lana 1.5 and Iris 3.5). We both did residencies in NM and I finished a sports medicine fellowship there as well. I am excited to show my daughters the Wasatch Front through skiing, biking, hiking and exploring. I look forward to building a new community in Salt Lake City and am excited to meet and work with you all!

Congratulations to Dr. Jason Tanner, MD, PhD, 2025-2026 University of Utah StrokeNet Fellow
We are proud to announce that Dr. Jason Tanner, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine, has been awarded a prestigious University of Utah StrokeNet Fellowship, a highly competitive, NIH-sponsored training program that supports early-career investigators in advancing stroke research. This fellowship provides salary support and $50,000 in research funding to accelerate Dr. Tanner’s work on uncovering molecular mechanisms of ischemic stroke and its systemic effects, particularly the role of GJA1-20k in protecting both the brain and heart from ischemic injury. Through this work, Dr. Tanner aims to advance our understanding of neurovascular injury pathways and lay the groundwork for future targeted interventions to improve outcomes after stroke.

Airway Management in Short-Haul Helicopter Evacuations: Comparing Ventilation Quality with Bag Valve Mask and O-Two CareVent |
TJ Hartridge, Eric Swanson, Wade Quilter (Med student), David Cabaniss, Brendan Lutz
Aims: This clinical trial will evaluate the Accuro XV, a new point-of-care imaging technology designed to address the limitations of X-ray, CT, and MRI in extremity trauma. Current methods face trade-offs in cost, radiation exposure, mobility, and soft-tissue visualization. The Accuro XV uses two mobile volumetric ultrasound probes and BoneEnhance™ image processing to generate rapid 3-D images of bone and soft tissue without ionizing radiation. This approach may improve diagnostic accuracy, reduce wait times, and streamline emergency care.

Dr. Jason Tanner, MD, PhD was accepted into the SAEM Advanced Research Methodology Evaluation and Design (ARMED) research course, and will be eligible to submit to the SAEM ARMED pilot grant next round!

Wilderness Medicine Fellowship x ACEP Hike
The ACEP Wellness Hike was lead by Drs. Hartridge and McIntosh. ACEP attendees were treated to refreshing hike to Donut Falls in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Along the trail, we explored topics of hydration, dehydration, altitude physiology, and field fluid resuscitation—all while sipping on wilderness-inspired mocktails designed to encourage acclimatization and hydration.
Overall, an excellent blend of science, community, and the outdoors. Thanks to all who joined us for learning, laughter, and a little wilderness medicine in action!

Dr. Ryan Ernst had the opportunity to speak at Conceptos in Mexico City this past July: https://conceptosmexico.com/
He and his team are now preparing to launch an exciting new collaboration with the University of Botswana Department of Emergency Medicine. This November, Dr. Ernst will travel with Cara Lembo and Anisha Tailor to help establish a new resident rotation elective and explore the development of a Global Emergency Medicine (GEM) fellowship opportunity.
In addition, Dr. Ernst has initiated discussions to create an ultrasound section collaboration and anticipates teaching a Primary Trauma Care (PTC) course—an LMIC-appropriate trauma program designed to “train the trainers” so local providers can continue educating their own providers: https://www.primarytraumacare.org/
He also recently presented a poster at ACEP and ICEM in Montreal highlighting the ongoing work on the Vietnam Diploma initiative.
