From the CEO
A Park for everyone!  That was our goal for the new riverfront park that was being designed…and it didn’t disappoint.

In August of 2015 AWS Foundation made a $200,000 grant to the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne. With the $100,000 match funds from Lilly Foundation, there was $300,000 to ensure the proposed new park would be accessible.  But what did that mean?

In partnership with The League and with Turnstone, a focus group was assembled at Design Collaborative to review the proposed design as initially drafted.  In a room filled with experts in landscape architecture, planning, park design and operations a group of 10 individuals and their families,  representing a variety of abilities, bravely provided their ideas and critiques.  They each wanted the park to be their park.  In that group were individuals with visual impairment, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injuries, Down syndrome, arthritis and other disabilities. Suggestions were well received and plans were redesigned.

Grantee Spotlight: RISE, Inc.
Last year RISE Inc. received a Mighty Money grant to start an employment training program for their clients at Chapman’s Brewing Company in Angola. Chapman’s, who before this opportunity did not serve food, was looking for a way to become more family-friendly. It was a perfect match! The grant was $2,500 for startup costs.

The RISE clients learn job skills including the preparation of food, handling money at the point of sale, and serving and clearing tables. Not only does this allow them to gain specific skills for work in a restaurant or retail setting, they also learn soft skills such as casual conversation and time management. The best part is that they are learning while making minimum wage. What started as a 6-month program became an enduring relationship between a disability service provider and a local business. Additionally, it allows the employees to meaningfully contribute to and take part in their own community.

The partnership between RISE and Chapman’s Brewing illustrates the significant impact such a small grant can have on the people we serve. We applaud RISE for taking the initiative to create the program and Chapman’s Brewing for welcoming those with disabilities into their work family. If you find yourself in Angola, stop in and grab a brew and/or a bite from our friends.

Meet the Staff

In this new series, AWS Foundation staff will each answer a question as a way for our readers to get to know the people behind the grantmaking. Sometimes the question will be serious, other times it will be fun.
This month's question is:
What is your favority thing about Northeast Indiana? We serve Northeast Indiana to create a place where those with disabilities can thrive.

Patti  - The friendly people!
Risé - Northeast Indiana is truly a great place to raise a family.
PJ - The weather.
Joni - My favorite thing is that we have a ‘little bit of everything’ in NE Indiana.  I can be in downtown Fort Wayne, spend quiet time on a lake, hike in a state park, and be involved in all kinds of activities, all within a short trip.  I want those things to be accessible to ALL people.

Jenny - There's always something to do, whether you're looking for something just for adults, or something the whole family can enjoy.

Vicki - My favorite thing about Northeast Indiana is its people! It’s said that variety is the spice of life and we have it here – from the arts and adaptive sporting events to accessible parks and programs. The people of Northeast Indiana are warm and welcoming with a history of neighbor helping neighbor. Add into the mix our region’s ongoing commitment to be an inclusive, diverse and vibrant community for people of all abilities and you have a great recipe for quality of life.
Andie - Our region has something for everyone.
Gail - The people and changing seasons.
