Student affairs message, program updates, wellness tips, and new resources!
JUNE 2020

To GVSU Students,

The recent unjust killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd and the attacks on the larger Black community break our hearts. Our deepest condolences are with their families.

These unacceptable incidents remind us that our efforts to confront injustice and promote equity are desperately needed. While the most egregious tragedies occurred far away, this is a longstanding pattern nationally, and it is clear racism also exists here close to home.

As Student Affairs staff, we are profoundly saddened by this ugly reality, and we are unapologetically committed to change. We will not become complacent. We pledge to increase our efforts to combat the oppressive status quo. Together, we will create a community where Black students are heard, valued, and safe.

Curious what the fall semester might look like at GVSU? A new website, gvsu.edu/lakerstogether, includes information on topics such as health and safety, returning to campus, university life, support for students and faculty, and information about a campuswide campaign called "Lakers Together — Standing Apart." This campaign is an effort to reinforce the best of Laker culture by always caring for each other.
This website will feature weekly video messages from President Mantella and will change often, so check back regularly for the most current information!
