The JMC School Career Fair is next week! All students are welcome to attend from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 in Stauffer-Flint Hall to learn more about internships, part-time positions, and full-time positions. Students can get free portraits for their LinkedIn profiles taken by professional photographer Nick Krug from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third floor. The resume review breakout room will be in the Austin Seminar Room from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Steve Rottinghaus at steve@rottinghaus@ku.edu.

Assistant Professor of the Practice Rebekka Schlichting is set to appear on the Season 7 of the television show “Stories from the Stage.” Schlichting will appear on the episode “Sacred Circle” on Nov. 13. It will be produced in collaboration with Nebraska Public Media and Vision Media Maker. Schlichting – an enrolled member of the Ioway Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska – honors the keeper of the connection between her people and her culture in the episode. New episodes premier Mondays at 8:30 p.m. CST on WORLD and can be watched on YouTube. The episode is part of the series’ efforts to spotlight Indigenous storytellers for Native American Heritage Month in November. Each episode features three amateur storytellers performing for a live audience.

JMC 104 and KU student Arthur Newby wrote a letter to the editor published in the Kansas City Star. Newby calls attention to the potential fallout for federal employees who won’t receive pay if the budget is not passed.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana's manuscript "Beyond the Dawn of Virtualized Learning Environments: A Comparative Study of Video and Augmented Reality Information Delivery on Student Engagement and Knowledge Retention" has been accepted for publication in the Computer Assisted Learning Journal.
Director of the Kansas Scholastic Press Association Eric Thomas attended a work session in Topeka at the Kansas State Department of Education to review and revise courses offered in digital arts and communications throughout the state. The group of teachers and professionals will provide recommendations to the state over the next few months. Those changes will affect high school curriculum in student journalism, graphic arts and media classes.
Associate Professor Mugur Geana delivered an online lecture on “Principles of Health Communication” to graduate students from the School of Public Health, Master of Health Administration program, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile.
Professor Yvonnes Chen and colleagues at KU Medical Center presented two virtual posters at the 2023 Kansas Public Health Association Conference. The first one was on evaluating the use of social media by COPE community health workers and the other centered on indigenous birthing people’s perceptions of maternal mortality.
Assistant professor Judy Watts presented her research on testimonials and persuasion at the positive media psychology symposium at Chapman University in Orange, California, on October 6. Her presentation titled, "Investigating the Effects of Eudaimonic Testimonials: A test of the EELM and EORM on Personal Stories" was included in the two-day conference involving recent research on positive media.

The deadline for the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Scholarships in Broadcasting & Electronic Media is Oct. 13. Scholarships are available to juniors, seniors and/or graduate students – unless otherwise noted in the descriptions. The BEA is awarding over $30,000 in scholarships.
Drop-in advising available: If you have any questions or need to meet with someone to discuss your classes or goals, an advisor is available from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday in Stauffer-Flint Hall, Room 117.
The RJI Student Innovation Competition deadline is approaching. Enter your team and idea by Oct. 16. The 2024 Challenge: Create something to help a newsroom measure the impact of their news coverage for their community. Each team can be up to four students, who can be enrolled at any college or university in the United States.
First prize: $10,000.
Second prize: $2,500.
Third prize: $1,000.

Texas PR firm to host externship program |

|
Pierpont Communications, an independent PR, marketing, digital and integrated communications firm in Texas, will host its fourth annual externship program from Oct. 16 to Oct. 18 to provide students an opportunity to understand how a public relations agency operates and the skills needed to be a successful applicant in future internships and jobs. It will be a free three-day program comprised of a virtual speaker series that will give students insight into media relations, digital and influencer marketing, today’s job market and more led by Pierpont experts. Pierpont will also hold a limited number of interviews with those who participate in the externship for one spring 2024 internship position. Here is the registration link.

Read this KU Alumni Magazine feature on JMC alumni Mark Dent and Rustin Dodd and their book, “Kingdom Quarterback.”
The book tells the story of Patrick Mahomes and the history of Kansas City and its pathway to the center of professional football. Dodd is a senior writer at The Athletic and previously worked as a sportswriter at the Kansas City Star from 2010 to 2017. Dent is a journalist whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Texas Monthly, Vox, Wired, The Kansas City Star and elsewhere. Both journalists grew up in the Kansas City area.
