LITERACY & NUMERACY - Number Recognition
When teaching your child about time, it is helpful if they can recognize numbers so they can understand calendars and clocks. To help your child learn their numbers, try making it fun and interactive and incorporate number practice into your routine. For example, on your commute search for numbers on road signs. When your child is doing crafts at home, you can try color-by-number drawings or connect the dots.
See the Arts & Crafts section below for a new year countdown activity to help work on number recognition.

ARTS & CRAFTS - New Year Countdown
Materials Needed:
Paper Plate • Scissors • Piece of Paper • Sharpie • Sequins • Glue
Directions:
Gather the materials above and in the center of the paper plate, cut two slits that are about an inch wide and an inch apart.
With the piece of paper, cut out a stripe that is also about an inch wide and will fit through the slits in the paper plate. On the paper that you cut, write the numbers 10-1 with a Sharpie, and end with 2023 at the bottom.
Decorate the plate so that is looks like the New Year's Eve ball in Times Square. We used sequins and attached them with glue, but you can also use glitter, sticker rhinestones, markers, or anything you have on hand.
On New Year's Eve, count down to 2023 with your child by pulling the piece of paper up through the ball until 2023 is in the center.

DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE - Sense of Time
When you tell your child that you are leaving for school in five minutes, do they actually comprehend how much time this is? Chances are that they have no idea because the concept of time is abstract to them. To help make time more tangible, it is helpful to use calendars and clocks for visualization.
With a calendar, you can add stickers to show your child which days of the week are school days or when a birthday will occur. When they ask you when their birthday is, you can show them on the calendar and discuss how many days away it is by counting them out. To make counting easier, you could make it part of your daily routine to have your child mark each day with an X.
As for clocks, analog versions are helpful at this age. You can teach your child how the hands move and that the little hand moves slowly and the big hand moves quickly. When getting ready in the morning, prompt your child that you need to leave when the little hand is on the 7 and the big hand is on the 6.
