In a research article recently published by Nurse Educator, Clinical Assistant Professors Regina Urban and Leslie Jennings, and Associate Professor Daisha Cipher set their sights on an understudied group of undergraduates – pre-nursing (or pre-clinical) students.
Approximately six months into the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Urban and her partners conducted a study of pre-nursing undergraduates, who are students planning to go into the nursing program and taking introductory courses in nursing, but not yet formally accepted into a nursing program. The study consisted of students who had signed up for on-campus courses at UTA, as well as students who anticipated taking their courses online. However, due to COVID-19, those who had anticipated in-person courses were now online learners as well.

| Improving Diagnosis of Underrecognized Illness
Lynda Jarrell, clinical assistant professor, is the author of “Asthma-COPD Overlap: The NP’s Role in Diagnosis and Management,” published in the February 2022 volume of the journal The Nurse Practitioner. In it, Jarrell discusses how patients may not have just asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but rather clinical symptoms reflective of both, known as asthma-COPD overlap (ACO). A different treatment plan is necessary to consider the full extent of the overlap, and not recognizing it could lead to increased mortality.
