Introduce Your Dog to Other Lakers
Come hang out with other Laker alumni and their furry friends on Saturday, September 21, at the Grand Ravines Dog Park! Register your dog to get them a bandana and a sample of alumna made dog treats. There will be coffee and donuts for the humans, too.

Enjoy drinks and appetizers on Wednesday, September 25, as a panel of alumni authors share their experiences with writing and publishing their works of non-fiction.

Alumni in 10 Interview: Paige Valensky '14
After earning her degree from Grand Valley, Paige Valenksy moved to Florida where she now teaches 4th grade math and science. She is thankful for her professors who prepared her for teaching in diverse environments, as they frequently addressed cultural sensitivity. She said that Grand Valley offered her a personalized college experience where she felt valued as a student and prepared to be a teacher upon graduation.

Area Employers Attend GVSU Inclusivity Conference
On July 26 about 200 area employers attended Grand Valley's Inclusive Recruitment and Retention Conference sponsored by the Division of Inclusion and Equity. Grand Valley staff members led sessions focused on how to destigmatize mental health in the workplace and how to recruit and retain more women of color, LGBTQIA+ employees, and people with disabilities.

Kaufman Interfaith Institute Hopes to Expand Work From $1 Million Grant
The Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley recently concluded a three-year grant study on interfaith understanding with meetings in Morocco and Jordan. The study was funded by a $938,975 grant from the John Templeton Foundation in October 2016 to provide the opportunity to align a global understanding of similarity between science and religion.
Kelly James Clark, senior research fellow at Kaufman Interfaith Institute, led the project, which included 36 participants representing 15 countries and three religions (Christian, Jewish, and Muslim). Clark is currently working to secure additional funding for this same group to continue its discussion and work.

Grand Valley Receives Gold Status From National Sustainability Group
Grand Valley State University has again received gold status after completing a sustainability assessment developed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. 
Grand Valley submits a sustainability report every other year for review, and has maintained its gold status consistently since 2013. Grand Valley became the first Michigan university to receive gold status, up from silver status in 2011.

Katie Chipman Makes GVSU Women's Golf History
Grand Valley State junior women's golfer Katie Chipman opened play at the 2019 U.S. Women's Amateur on Monday, August 5 at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
On Thursday, August 8, she fell to her opponent, Annabelle Fuller of England. Chipman returns to GVSU as the two-time GLIAC Women's Golfer of the Year and a 2019 Second-Team All-American.

Twelve Lakers Earn Swimming and Diving Scholar All-America Honors
The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced that a combined 12 Grand Valley swimming and diving student-athletes were named to the Scholar All-American Team for the 2018-19 season. The award recognizes students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and competed at their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The selections are drawn from 190 colleges and universities across all Divisions. Congratualtions to these Lakers!

Club Sport Highlight: Men's Club Lacrosse Coach Helps Build Wheelchair Team at Mary Free Bed
After coaching men's lacrosse for nearly two decades and playing it for much longer, Tim Murray, coach for Grand Valley's men's club lacrosse team, thought he knew every aspect of the sport. But in June, Murray was introduced to wheelchair lacrosse athletes through the adaptive sports program at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids. His enthusiasm and connections have built the team to 10 players.

Daniel and Pamella DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health Video
The Daniel and Pamella DeVos Center for Interprofessional Health will be a five-story building and allow Grand Valley to significantly expand and update its simulation center, doubling space available for student experiences. Since 2011 there has been over a 100% increase in the utilization of the simulation center, which prepares Grand Valley students by mimicking what is going to happen in the real clinical world. Help raise the standard of care in West Michigan by giving today!
