School hosts podcast workshop for students |

Digital Media Specialist Natalie Lindsey hosted JMC students for a podcast workshop last Friday in Dole. Students learned the basics of producing a podcast and growing their podcast audience. Lindsey will host a workshop on the first Friday of each month for the rest of the semester for JMC students interested in learning more about podcasting.

The University of Stirling study abroad program is available this summer. Students will travel to Stirling, Scotland and enroll in JMC 500 Topics in Journalism: Media and Culture in Scotland, and optionally one course taught by the University of Stirling from June 8 to July 6, 2024. The Kansas Association of Broadcasters is accepting entries for the 2024 student broadcast awards until 11:59 p.m., Feb. 15. The Student Broadcast Excellence Awards celebrate and honor the exceptional achievements of students in broadcast and media. Associate Professor Teri Finneman and co-author Ryan Thomas were finalists for the Sweeney Award for best journalism history article of 2023 in Journalism History for their article, “Blood on their Hands” vs. “A Foolish Prank”: The British Press’s Response to a Deadly Hoax on the Royal Family.
Career and Outreach Coordinator Steve Rottinghaus judged sports and entertainment management at the Future Business Leaders of America District VII Conference in Topeka.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman's co-authored book, Reviving Rural News, released Friday. The book is an 18-month research experiment examining the business model for weeklies.
Associate Dean for Student Success Scott Reinardy was interviewed in an article on NiemanLab discussing burnout in journalism and how newsrooms are fighting back. Reinardy has studied newsroom burnout for over 20 years.

Save the date for the Feb. 21 Career Fair Prep Workshop to learn how to make the most from the Career Fair experience the following week. Students will receive tips on resumes, networking and professional pitches at the 1 p.m. session in the Clarkson Gallery. Pizza will be provided.

Program Director/Senior Digital Media Trainer Heather Lawrenz was recently selected to be part of the Adobe Community Experts team. She will be sharing a lot of new content on her personal social channels @halawrenz on YouTube. Be sure to follow her work there, as well as @jschooltech on Instagram and YouTube. The Adobe Community Experts Program consists of creatives, freelancers, authors, publishers, hobbyists, content creators, educators, trainers and industry influencers who use their experience and expertise to guide, educate and inspire the current and next generation of Adobe users. There are approximately 400 Community Experts around the world.
Tech Committee schedule update: The JSchool Tech Committee will meet Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. in Stauffer-Flint Hall 312 but will not meet on Feb. 14.
The Technology Committee is looking for the input of JMC students. Please take this survey to share your experiences with internships and tech skills. The survey will help us better understand how J-School Tech services can better meet the needs of our students for their professional pursuits.
