Axel and Barrett’s story: Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome requires fetal intervention and in-utero surgery to beat the odds |
Looking at 5-year-old twins Axel and Barrett today, you’d never guess everything they went through, even before they were born. Their journey started with a rare twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome diagnosis, weekly monitoring and in-utero surgery, followed by being born at just 29 weeks and a 30-day stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). In high volume fetal therapy centers in the United States, about 70% of pregnancies treated for TTTS end with two healthy babies.
Thanks to the Midwest Fetal Care Center (MWFCC), a partnership between highly trained maternal-fetal medicine experts from Allina Health and pediatric and neonatal specialists from Children’s Minnesota, the boys beat the odds and are now happy, healthy kindergartners.
Read their full story, including insight from Saul Snowise, MD, the medical director of the MWFCC.

Concussion clinic expanded access in Maple Grove
The Children’s Minnesota Specialty Center in Maple Grove (Bass Lake Road) added a concussion clinic for kids and young adults, further expanding our pediatric care offerings in the northwestern Twin Cities metro area. After initial care for a concussion, patients may also use rehabilitation services at the Children’s Minnesota Specialty Center in Maple Grove (Elm Creek) for high-quality concussion care and faster recovery.

"The Children’s Minnesota concussion clinic takes a multi-discipline approach to concussions. We work with physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech, an ophthalmologist, a psychologist, a neuropsychologist, and a neurosurgery team that all have specialized training on the recovery of concussions and are experts in the care and recovery of children,” said Kari Abraham, APRN, CPNP-PC, concussion specialist at the Maple Grove concussion clinic.
“Patients that have experienced a blow to the head and have a suspected concussion should go to the emergency room for evaluation and possible imaging on the day of the injury and then be referred to a pediatric concussion clinic within the first two weeks of the injury or if symptoms are lingering,” Abraham said.

100 years of taking special care of kids
For 100 years, Children’s Minnesota has been caring for kids in special ways. Dr. Walter Reeve Ramsey, one of the founders of Children’s Hospital of St. Paul in 1924, knew kids aren’t smaller versions of adults; they need their health care tailored to their smaller bodies. Dr. Ramsey also knew sick and injured kids need facilities that reflect the kind of place where kids will thrive as kids.
After serving in World War I, Dr. Ramsey dreamed of building in St. Paul what he helped create in France: “A hospital to fit the child instead of molding the child to fit the hospital.” In 1925, a reporter wrote about her visit to the new hospital, “[It is in what was] a St. Paul residence … the snug attractiveness of a real home… filled with getting-well babies who are receiving the best care that modern science and medical skills can give them.”
