In Utah, we are lucky to have not just one but two July holidays to celebrate. The Osher offices will be closed on Friday July 24th in observance of Pioneer Day. Enjoy the summer day!

As we end one term and start launching the next, please save these dates for fall term. Registration opens August 21 at 9:00 am.
Our August 24 Red Butte Garden open house and instructor previews will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Join us for a complimentary continental breakfast and free admission to the garden while you meet our fall instructors, mingle with fellow Osher members, and meet new friends. Invite friends or neighbors to join you because an Osher membership is not required! We collect school supply donations for local children in need, thanks to dedicated longtime Osher volunteer Connie Reed.

Over 120 fall classes will begin on September 21 and run through November 18. Classes will be posted on our website in early August. Our new fall brochure is about to go to print and will come directly to your home mailbox. More information will be coming soon!

Course Evaluation Surveys |
Whenever an Osher term is winding down, please be on the lookout for Osher course evaluation surveys coming to your email inbox. If you’ve already filled an evaluation out for summer or other previous terms, thank you for taking the time to do this! Osher staff, instructors, and Curriculum Committee volunteers carefully read and value each and every response. Your input helps our instructors know that they are making a difference when complimented and learn how to improve where needed. Your feedback, comments, and suggestions help us to make Osher even better!

This is a 2-Part free special event. You may join us at either or both locations.
Part 1: Reynolds Flat. The Meeting of the Glaciers is a grand geologic event that shaped our beautiful Wasatch Front from about 30K to 15K years ago. Several geologic features remain from this ice-age event to pique our interest as well as the creation of our primary culinary water source for the Wasatch Front. A leisurely 1 hour or less walk (an uneven dirt trail, 25' elevation gain).
|
|
| |
|
Part 2: Spruces Campground. Regroup for picnic/snacks here about 11:00. Millions of tree seedlings were grown here in the Spruces Nursery from 1905 to 1921 and then planted by hand to reforest the denuded mountainsides of Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. Learn the inspiring story of community and cooperation to restore our beautiful canyons. A .35 mile flat walk for one hour (mostly paved and flat, some uneven dirt trail).
Altitude is 7500 feet. No pets or support animals. Bring a filled water bottle or two (no water onsite!), snacks and/or picnic lunch, sturdy shoes, sunhat, sunblock, bug spray and (optional) hiking poles. Your leaders are Julie Myers and David Anson, Osher members and naturalists.

The word "shaman" is often used to describe individuals who carry ancient spiritual and healing traditions within their communities. For nearly 30 years, Jerry Buie and Bruce Frazier have built meaningful relationships with indigenous healers, medicine people, and traditional elders from around the world, including the Andes and Amazon, regions of Peru, Mongolia, Africa, and native communities here in the United States. This is a unique, first-time opportunity for Osher members to explore these spiritual practices in an accessible and thoughtful way. Please join us for what promises to be an inspiring and meaningful presentation.

Did you know we start losing muscle as early as age 30 and this accelerates after 60? This loss impacts balance, mobility, bone density, and independence. The good news? Strength training can help reverse that trend. Join us for a FREE dynamic session on how building strength supports better health, sharper cognition, and improved quality of life as we age. You'll learn science-backed strategies to safely get started (and stick with it!) - plus enjoy a short demonstration and time for Q&A.

Join the Osher Booker Book Group for our August meeting as we discuss June/July's book selection, The Luminaries (2013) by Eleanor Catton. The novel examines the world of shipping, banking, and the gold rush in 1800's New Zealand. At 800 pages, we need two months to read it! We meet monthly at the Osher Building to discuss the previous month's book selection. Everyone is welcome. Perhaps we are "novel" in that we actually discuss the book! Next meeting (September), we will discuss The Life of Pi (2002) by Yann Martel.
Please note: Registration is required for each month's meeting you plan to attend.
