For years, it was Grant Snyder's job to supervise sweeps of homeless encampments as a commander for the Minneapolis Police Department.
But he built a reputation as a different kind of cop among folks living on the street. Snyder would regularly bring them meals and blankets. When he retired last summer, Snyder threw himself headfirst into his wife's nonprofit, Involve, which feeds and mentors people experiencing food insecurity.
Involve has been stationed at the headquarters for Agate Housing and Services Food Centre since October. Reporter Susan Du spent time with the folks who run the nonprofit, as well as the people who need its services.
“This is like a family service. There’s a difference. You’re not being made to feel like the cattle coming to the trough,” said Katy Creighton, who has been visiting Involve for the past month.
Du also spoke with Snyder about the misconceptions the public has about homeless people and the work he and his family do to serve the vulnerable population.
