Junior Granville
For Junior Granville,
It's Never Too Late for Great Service
When Junior Granville (he/him) saw two travelers in a pickle, he stepped in with knowledgeable and friendly assistance. Though these two visitors had a bumpy start to their honeymoon, Junior's kindness saved the day and earned this letter of appreciation:
"My husband and I arrived at PDX with about 15 minutes until our planned departure to start our honeymoon. We were too late to check our bag, so we quickly started to stuff our carry-on with as much as we could. Junior noticed that we were frantic and asked what was going on. He offered assistance, and it was such a relief to have some help given how stressful flying can be.
In the end, we missed our flight and had to wait in the airport for about eight hours until the next one. Junior was kind enough to meet up with us again and really went above and beyond to help. He turned the day around, and now it is more of a fun story to tell everyone about how our honeymoon started. We are so thankful that Junior made this very unpleasant situation something we can now look back on and smile about. He is the best!"
Junior was honored at the PDX People Customer Service Awards, where we recognize airport employees who truly stand out as extraordinary. Current state of demolition in former clocktower plaza
What's New with PDX Next: Noise Update, New Roof, June Forum and Airport Way Lane Closure
Noise Update: Noise levels should be moderate this week, and you may notice more sounds near the D/E checkpoint as demolition continues in the northeast area of the former Clocktower Plaza. Active work hours are continuous from Monday at 6 a.m. through Saturday at 6 p.m.
New Main Terminal Roof: In an exciting next step for the new roof, Monday, July 11, is the anticipated start date for Y column installation. Y columns are giant steel columns that hold up the new roof and are, unsurprisingly, y-shaped. What might surprise you is that these columns are so giant they need to be brought in with their own police escort! Hours and days for installation will vary, but it won’t be every day. In general, you can expect this work Monday through Friday between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. and occasionally on Saturdays.
June Forum: Look no further – we've got the inside scoop on construction at PDX. Jen Reynolds with the Port of Portland along with Pat Bifone and Caitlin Powell of Hoffman-Skanska shared the latest construction updates and answered your questions about PDX Next. This forum covered Concourse B roof work, ticket lobby scaffolding, some great "before and after" shots of the former Clocktower Plaza and more! They also shared a sneak peek of how the roof will be divided for transport and a timeline of the roof installation. Watch the June forum now.
Airport Way: The right turn lane from Airport Way to Air Cargo Road will be closed to public access throughout July.

Look and Listen to the Future of PDX
While PDX may be famous for its carpet and looking down to take shoe selfies, our new handcrafted wood roof finally gives people a reason to look up!  A new PDX Next creative campaign launched this past week, designed to delight PDX employees and passengers with what’s in it for them – and make them proud of how we’ve built PDX’s iconic new roof in a way that’s better for the land and better for our local communities. You can see the new immersive installations in the north and south bypasses and outside the Security Badging office.
Lani Hill holding her Golder Sparky award
Lani Hill Honored with 2022 Golden Sparky Award
Last week, Portland Airport Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Marshal Lani Hill was recognized with the 2022 Golden Sparky Award, honoring a fire service member for outstanding achievement in fire prevention or public fire safety education.
Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple presented the award, which celebrates Lani’s many achievements in her 15 years at PDX. Fire Chief Rob Mathis shared, “I believe that Lani embodies the values of leadership, inclusion and service. No task is too big, and it’s always taken on with a positive, can-do attitude. Lani is a tireless worker and a true ambassador for Portland Airport Fire and Rescue to PDX employees and our local community.”

Celebrating Pacific Northwest Heritage with Photographer Harley Cowan
Designed specifically for PDX, "Historic Wonderland" is a retrospective exhibition of 16 black and white photographs by Portland-based artist and architect Harley Cowan. The photographs celebrate our region’s history and are grouped thematically: Jantzen Beach Carousel, Northwest Style, No Longer Extant and The Manhattan Project.
"Historic Wonderland" was conceived to complement Portland photographer and filmmaker Cory Kaufman’s eight-minute documentary about Cowan and his practice, titled "Heritage Documentation." The short film is currently on view at the airport as part of the PDX Hollywood Theatre microcinema’s Summer 2022 program

Hollywood Theatre PDX Microcinema Heats Up with Summer Program
If you’re working at PDX and have a badge that takes you post-security, head over to the PDX Hollywood Theatre microcinema on Concourse C to check out the latest short film lineup! The newest batch of locally made films highlight the diverse community of women bike and motorcycle riders in Oregon, Portland's thriving Samba community, and the world’s one and only Contact Lens Museum in Forest Grove. Fun fact: If you attended the last PDX People Excellence in Service Awards, you might recognize a film played at that event. Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream is about an unlikely friendship between a pet dog and a stray cat and was created by Port of Portland employee Steve Cowden.
PDX’s New Roof Is as Local as Your Farmers’ Market
Have you heard of the locavore movement from the mid-2000s? It challenged people to eat food grown within 100 miles of where they live. For the wooden roof at PDX’s new main terminal, we essentially asked all our partners, from forest stewards to construction companies, to stick to a locavore diet…with wood. Our original goal was to make sure that all the lumber came from sustainably managed forests in the Cascadia region – basically, everywhere a salmon might swim upstream. By the time we sourced all 2.6 million board-feet of Douglas fir, we realized every forest and firm that supplied our wood is within 300 miles of the airport. Check out our map to see if the wood came from a forest you know.

Happy Fourth of July
The Fourth of July – also known as Independence Day or July 4th – has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Though we often celebrate July 4 with fireworks, in the interest of safety, both Portland and Vancouver banned their use. You can still enjoy the sparkle of sanctioned fireworks – check out this list of local events.
