Note from our Office
Dear Calumet County,
Happy July! This means it is officially time to fill out your fair entries for the 2023 Calumet County Fair, if you have not done so already. Fair entries are due no later than Wednesday, July 31st. As a reminder, Fair Entry is connected to your 4HOnline Account, so you won't need to create a new account AND it should automatically fill in a lot of your information for you.
I am planning to hold an information meeting on Wednesday, July 10th at 6-7pm at the Calumet County Courthouse in room #025. This will be a great opportunity for all new families to come and learn more about exhibiting at the Calumet County Fair and get a start at filling out their entry forms. If you are unable to attend, but would like to talk through some questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to our office. Please know this is dependant on if I am on maternity leave or not. More details will be emailed out to all families the week of the orientation.
As always, we are always available to answer any questions or concerns you have related to Calumet County 4-H. Please call the Extension Office at 920-849-1450 or email me at carlea.liermann@wisc.edu
Sincerely,
Carlea Liermann
Calumet County 4-H Educator

Leaders Council Highlight
The Calumet County 4-H Leaders Council Exec Board is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, June 12th at 7pm in room #025 at the Calumet County Courthouse. This was the last meeting for the current exec board before the newly elected board takes over this month.
During the meeting, they will start discussing things for the Calumet County Fair such as the Food Stand, the Foods Auction, and other tasks that will fast approach. Troy Jansen and Debbi Calaway are taking the lead of the Foods Auction, as Carlea will be out on maternity leave during this time. The group also discussed the changes in the newsletter, as it is now a different format and will not be mailed out to families. The Food Stand Committee decided to meet the last week in June. Lastly, the group discussed briefly the teen travel experience as that will be taking place in July.
At the next meeting, the newly elected board will take place with board officer elections. They will also decide when their monthly meetings will take place moving forward as they have been on the 2nd Wednesday of the month. They will continue to plan accordingly for the 2024 Calumet County Fair.

Be sure to include flyers or signs about who to contact for more information about your club. Include an invitation to join you for a meeting! First place $25; second place $20; all other participants $15!

Clubs can Request Marketing Materials
Did you know your club can request marketing materials for events suchs as local parades or events that your club signs up for to market your club or Calumet County 4-H? This can include any of our brochures, WI 4-H activity books, and sometimes other materials such as stickers, pencils, notepads, etc., depending what we have in the office. If you'd like to request materials, all you need to do is reach out to the 4-H Office at least 2 weeks in advance to ensure enough time to get materials printed as we may not have extra on hand.
Way to go Charlesburg Stars 4-H Club for representing Calumet County 4-H this past weekend in their local parade!

Summer 4-H Opportunities
We're only a month into Summer, but our members are already taking advantage of the oppourtunities 4-H has to offer!
Emma Wagner just got back over the weekend after spending one week at the nation's capital for Citizenship Washington Focus! Participants learn about the roles of our representatives in the government. Youth get to see and experience government in action by meeting with their state's members of congress and watching a House of Representatives meeting.
Abby Meyer and Allison Peer also just got back after traveling 10 days with the American Spirit Educational Experience! Youth experience history and heritage of America by immersing in a 10-day bus journey to the East Coast and Canada. You can see a picture of Abby & Allision above from when they went whale watching!
This week is Summer Academy, and we have 2 youth, Isaac Nagel and Josie Mertens, who are helping support the statewide program, and we have 2 other youth who will be program participants. We can't wait to hear more about their awesome experiences and how they are able to dive deeper into careers related to their SPARKS!

Avian Influenza in Dairy CattleThis press release is from WI DATCP. In an effort to prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)(H5N1) in dairy cattle, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is requiring Influenza A testing prior to movement of lactating dairy cattle to fairs or exhibitions effective beginning June 19, 2024. The release has more information about the directive.
This requirement will be in effect for local fairs, district and state breed shows, state fair, etc. In addition, please keep this in mind if you are hosting any upcoming 4-H dairy clinics, meeting, shows, etc. where lactating dairy cattle are planned to be present – these events would be included with this order. As always, 4-H families should connect with their local veterinarian for more information and best practices working with their animals.
More information about Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1) in Dairy Cattle can be found on the DATCP site: https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Programs_Services/AvianInfluenzaCattle.aspx
